Understanding Class 10 Streams & Boards
As a student, you may have often wondered, “After the 10th, what are the courses I can choose from?” Whether you completed your Class 10 under CBSE, ICSE, or any State Board, you are eligible for the full range of diploma, ITI, and certificate courses available across India. ITI and polytechnic diploma courses accept students who have passed Class 10 from CBSE, ICSE, or any State Board.
State-level ITI admission is regulated by the respective state’s Directorate of Vocational Education and Training (DVET) or Directorate General of Training (DGT), which oversees merit-based counselling and seat allocation. This uniform eligibility removes the confusion around board compatibility and opens doors to thousands of government and private institutions nationwide.
Impact of the Choice of Your Stream
If you choose to continue into the 11th and 12th grades, your stream selection will shape your eligibility for future courses. The Science stream (with Maths) is required for engineering diplomas, with a minimum 50% aggregate (40% for SC/ST/OBC) in Maths and Science as standard eligibility. Commerce and Arts students have equal access to hospitality, design, digital marketing, and non-technical ITI trades like COPA, Stenography, and Library Assistant.
The stream you pick does not close all other doors, but it does determine which technical diploma paths remain open. If you are uncertain about committing to a stream for two years, exploring a diploma or ITI trade directly after 10th can be a faster, more focused route to employment.
After 10th Courses: A Quick-Scan Guide to Your Options
