MHRD Scholarship

A lot of students tend to give up their dreams of higher education because of financial constraints. But there are several scholarships awarded by the government and other organizations to promote meritorious students achieve their dreams. What is MHRD Scholarship?

The Ministry of Human Resource Development offers various scholarship programs for meritorious students who do not have the means to pursue their higher studies. The scholarships offered by the MHRD are merit-based, need-based, career-specific, and college-specific. The MHRD Scholarships are divided into National and International Scholarships and offered to the students who meet the criteria.

National Scholarship
  • Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students.
  • Special Scholarship for Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Scheme of Scholarship to Students from the Non-Hindi Speaking States for Post Matric Studies in Hindi.
The International/ External Scholarships
  • Commonwealth Scholarship for the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
  • Scholarships offered by China, Mexico, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Israel, and Italy. 
  • Agatha Harrison Memorial Scholarship.

National Scholarships

At the national level, the MHRD offers some scholarships, the tuition fee of which are either waived partially or completely. Here are the major MHRD scholarships offered at national level.

Scholarship for College and University Students (CSS)

  • The Central Sector Scholarship is offered to students who are studying in a government recognized engineering or medical colleges in India.
  • The students are expected to score above 80% in their 12th standard.
  • The scholarship is offered to those who have an annual family income of less than 6 lakh.
  • The scholarship amount offered is Rs 10,000 per annum for the first 3 years and Rs. 20,000 for the 4th and 5th years.

Special Scholarship for Jammu and Kashmir

  • This MHRD Scholarship is offered to students who are residents of Jammu and Kashmir and have completed their 10+2 in the state itself.
  • The scholarship is offered to those who have an annual family income of less than 6 lakh.
  • Fields covered are General Streams, Engineering Branches, and Medical Science.
  • For Engineering and Medical stream, Rs.1.25 lakh and Rs 3 lakh per annum respectively will be provided. However, for the general courses, Rs 30,000 per annum will be disbursed.

Scheme of Scholarship to Students from the Non-Hindi Speaking States for Post Matric Studies in Hindi

  • The scholarship is offered to students who study Hindi in a state that does not have Hindi as their official language.
  • The Scholarship expands from 11th standard to PhD.
  • The amount offered under this MHRD scholarship ranges between Rs 300 – Rs 1,000 per month.

External MHRD Scholarships

External scholarships are offered by a wide range of countries for scores of UG, PG, or Doctoral programs. While some cover full tuition fees, the others give partial fee waivers. Enlisted are the details of the Commonwealth Scholarships followed by a table that sheds light on scholarships offered by different governments across the world.

Commonwealth Scholarship for New Zealand

This external MHRD scholarship is offered to students who are planning to pursue their master’s or PhD degree in the field of Renewable Energy or Agricultural Development.

  • There is no age limit defined.
  • The applicant must have completed their UG/PG degree in a college recognized by the government of India with at least 65% marks.
  • Those who are abroad, their applications will not be taken into consideration.
  • The scholarship will cover full tuition fees, medical and travel insurance, establishment or fortnightly allowance, etc.
  • Submitting IELTS/TOEFL scorecard is required.

Commonwealth Scholarship for the UK

For those of you who want to pursue a masters/PhD in the field of Humanities and Social Science, Pure and Applied Science, Engineering and Technology, or Agriculture fields, then this is an ideal external MHRD scholarship to consider. Here are some important criteria to pursue this scholarship program:

  • Notification released between August-September.
  • Age should not be more than 40 years.
  • The applicant needs to submit the IELTS score.
  • A stipend of £1,043 per month will be offered. Spouse or child allowance is also available.
  • For both Masters and PhD, a minimum of 60% marks or above is required for Humanities and Social Sciences and 65% or above in Engineering, Technology, Agriculture, and related fields.
