In the year 2019, a bill was passed to replace two major examinations FMGE & NEET PG in the field of Medical across India with one Exam known as the NEXT Exam. It will set a standard for the medical practice & education system in India. The exam will be applied at all universities offering medical degrees. In this blog, we will discuss the NEXT Exam.

What is the NEXT Exam?

A bill was introduced by the National Commission Medical Bill (NMC) in 2019 and was approved by the cabinet ministry. NEXT is a single-window examination that will be replacing three major examinations NEET-PG & Foreign Graduate Medical Examination in India. A batch of 2017 MBBS will be the first batch to appear for the test in the year 2022. It is mandatory for all the students of MBBS final year & it will be conducted in two phases.

Phases

It will be conducted in two phases – NEXT 1 & NEXT 2. Here all the details about both phases.

The Official pattern has not been released by the official authority, the below-mentione pattern was proposed before. NEXT 2 will be a practical examination that will be conducted by the university/college.  There might be some changes & we will update accordingly.

Objectives

It is not just a replacement for the other tests it has various other objectives as well. Here are the Objectives:

  • Students from India have to clear the test if they want to get a license & practice in India.
  • Ensure the high standard of medical professionals
  • It will help to test the theoretical & practical knowledge of medical students. 
  • Students that have completed medical studies from abroad will also have to appear for the test for license & practice in India.
  • It will also be used for admission into MBBS & PG courses.
  • After clearing the test, students will have to complete a 3-year internship in rural/tribal areas of India & students of the PG course will have to work another 3-year internship according to their course specialization.

  1. Very important information. Here is a question toask. Will the 2021 batch students appear NExT exam?

      No, the NEXT Exam is not for 2021 batch students. It will take place from 2023. Hope this helps!

  2. If i pass both NEXT 1 and NEXT 2, but I’m not satisfied with my NEXT 1 marks, can i reappear in NEXT 1?

    1. Hi Parthvi,
      Yes, you can reappear for the NEXT 1 exam after the NEXT 2 exam. There will be unlimited attempts in the NEXT exam. A score of the NEXT-1 exam will be valid for 2 to 3 years for the purpose of PG Entrance ranking.
