Example 1:
The following grade card represents the grades and credits earned by a student in a semester. Let us understand the process of calculating CGPA in a particular semester.

For each subject, the candidates are awarded credit and a grade. We multiply the credits with he scored points and divide the result by the total number of credits to get the Semester Grade Point Average or SGPA. In this case, SGPA is

4×10+ 3×8.5 + 5×7.5 + 4×7.5 + 4×7.5 + 4×7.5+ 2×7.5 + 2×8.5)/ (28×10)
= 8.04

CGPA in engineering is the average of all the SGPAs. One can add the SGPA earned in each semester and divide them by the total number of semesters. CGPA can either be calculated out of 10 or 4, depending upon the university. Suppose a person gets the following SGPAs in 8 Semesters:

 Semesters SGPA I 5 II 6 III 7 IV 8 V 9 VI 8 VII 6 VIII 5

In the above case, the CGPA for Engineering would be:
(5+6+7+8+9+8+6+5) / 8
= 6.75

Example 2
Say that physics is awarded a total of 4 credit points and mathematics to is awarded a total of 4 credit points by your university. Now imagine that the marks range and the simultaneous grade point with it is as follows:

90-10 is a 10 that translates to an O
80-89 is a 9 that translates to an A
70-79 is an 8 that translates to a B
and so forth

Now imagine that you score an 86 in your physics and a 96 in your mathematics. This means that you will get a 9 for your physics and a 10 for your mathematics. Your CGPA would technically be:

(The Credit awarded to the subject * The Point that you have received) / The total credit points
In this case, it would mean
(4*9 + 4* 10) / 8
(36+ 40) / 8
76/8 = 9.5
Which means that your CGPA would be a 9.5.

Note: CGPA or Cumulative Grade Point Average can be obtained out of 10 or by 4 depending upon the system followed by the educational institute.
