You must have come across the term CGPA quite a few times in your life and you must have also wondered about what it means and how it is calculated. Most engineering colleges nowadays follow the credit system as it is a global system of evaluating results and scores. The CGPA system is also an effective way of evaluating scores as it helps one in understanding where they stand when compared to their peers. Most colleges now engage in the credit system and most universities also demand that students produce their CGPA during the admission process. If you are someone who has been curious about how to calculate CGPA in engineering or are trying to understand how to go about it for your applications, here is a guide on how to calculate CGPA in engineering.

What is CGPA and How to Calculate CGPA in Engineering
CGPA refers to the cumulative grade point average which literally translates to the sum total of all your credit points. In the CGPA system grades are allotted for a specific bracket of marks, say 90-95 marks bracket is allotted an A, on the basis of your grade points your total aggregate is calculated. This means that all your grades are combined together and then they are divided by the total subjects that you undertook in that semester. The CGPA system helps in assessing the overall academic performance of a student. Different countries have different ways of evaluating a student’s performance but the CGPA system is among the most commonly used ways of evaluating. Hence it is important that you have an idea on how to calculate CGPA in engineering.

How do Engineering Colleges Calculate/Award GPA/CGPA?
In general, to calculate the SGPA or Semester Grade Point Average, candidates have to multiply the credits by 10. CGPA is calculated with the help of credit points. Let us understand how to calculate CGPA in engineering with the help of some examples:
The following grade card represents the grades and credits earned by a student in a semester. Let us understand the process of calculating CGPA in a particular semester.
For each subject, the candidates are awarded credit and a grade. We multiply the credits with he scored points and divide the result by the total number of credits to get the Semester Grade Point Average or SGPA. In this case, SGPA is
4×10+ 3×8.5 + 5×7.5 + 4×7.5 + 4×7.5 + 4×7.5+ 2×7.5 + 2×8.5)/ (28×10)
CGPA in engineering is the average of all the SGPAs. One can add the SGPA earned in each semester and divide them by the total number of semesters. CGPA can either be calculated out of 10 or 4, depending upon the university. Suppose a person gets the following SGPAs in 8 Semesters:
In the above case, the CGPA for Engineering would be:
(5+6+7+8+9+8+6+5) / 8
Say that physics is awarded a total of 4 credit points and mathematics to is awarded a total of 4 credit points by your university. Now imagine that the marks range and the simultaneous grade point with it is as follows:
90-10 is a 10 that translates to an O
80-89 is a 9 that translates to an A
70-79 is an 8 that translates to a B
and so forth
Now imagine that you score an 86 in your physics and a 96 in your mathematics. This means that you will get a 9 for your physics and a 10 for your mathematics. Your CGPA would technically be:
(The Credit awarded to the subject * The Point that you have received) / The total credit points
In this case, it would mean
(4*9 + 4* 10) / 8
(36+ 40) / 8
76/8 = 9.5
Which means that your CGPA would be a 9.5.
Note: CGPA or Cumulative Grade Point Average can be obtained out of 10 or by 4 depending upon the system followed by the educational institute. Out of 10 can be changed to out of 4 by simply dividing the total by 10 and further multiplying it by 4. To know more read our blog on convert percentage to GPA out of 10

Q1: How is CGPA Calculated?
There are various ways to calculate CGPA in Engineering. To calculate the same, candidates need to add score point of each subject and divide it by the total number of subjects. Engineering students can also convert CGPA to percentage, CPI to percentage and CGPA to marks.
Q2: What is a good CGPA in Engineering?
Usually, CGPA or CPI of 8 or above is considered good. If the student is planning to study abroad then scoring a little higher will help them with the admission process. CPI to percentage conversion is also possible for those colleges which have cutoffs in percentage.
Q3: How is SGPA to CGPA calculated?
SGPA to CGPA for Engineering can be calculated by simply adding all SGPAs and dividing them by the total number of semesters.
Advantages of CGPA
There are numerous advantages of calculating CGPA and that is why you should be well versed with how to calculate CGPA in engineering. As someone who is interested in pursuing engineering or even as someone who is already pursuing an engineering degree, knowing how to calculate your CGPA can help you a lot with your applications for further studies. Here are a few of the advantages of having the CGPA system of grading and evaluating your results:
- One of the major advantages of the CGPA system is the fact that since grades are awarded to students it will help them in analyzing their strengths and weaknesses.
- Having a certain marks bracket for grades also ensures that students are not discouraged and feel motivated when they fall in a good bracket. This will help them in putting in more effort.
- This system also ensures that students don’t feel the pressure to score certain marks, such a competition tends to shift the focus on marks rather than learning.
- This system also ensures that students are able to evaluate where they stand in comparison to their peers and feel motivated to learn from their mistakes.
- It also helps the universities in accurately analyzing where one stands in comparison to the other applicants.
