CGPA is quite a popular term that you must have heard at the time of your class 10th results. It stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average and is used to denote the overall average performance of students throughout their academic program in a year. CGPA is indicated by a ‘number’, unlike percentages and grades that are assigned under the Indian Grading System. For example, if you get an ‘A grade’ in a subject, then the marks obtained would range between ‘90-95’ and your CGPA calculated would be ‘9’.

If you add the grade points of every subject in a semester and then divide it by the total number of subjects, you can get the CGPA for that particular semester.

CGPA to Marks Formula for CBSE

Now that you have got an idea about how CGPA is different from marks, let’s take a look at how you can convert your CGPA to marks.

As per CBSE, the Percentage of Marks = 9.5 x CGPA

For example, if you received a 7 CGPA in 12th, then your total percentage of marks would be, 7×9.5= 66.5%. Moreover, if you want to calculate total marks from here, then you can simply multiply your percentage divided by 100 by the total marks (total of all subjects). So, here if you have total 5 subjects with 100 as total marks each, then your marks in 12th would be (66.5/100) x 500= 332.5. Thus, 7 CGPA would be 332.5 marks.

Why multiply by 9.5?
It has been stated that CBSE referred to the results of the previous 5 years and then found average marks of all the students who had their scores in the top percentile of 91 to 100. The closest average was 95 marks and A1 grade equals 91-100 marks, i.e. 10 GPA so, they divided 95 by 10, this is how 9.5 became the multiplier for CGPA calculator by CBSE.

An indicative equivalence of grade point and marks can be assessed as follows:

  • Subject-wise indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 х Grade Point of the subject.
  • Overall indicative percentage of the marks = 9.5 х CGPA

Advantages of the CGPA System

Now, let us understand the merit of using a CGPA system. The main objective of this system is to reduce the academic pressure on students to a certain level. The real academic score and its corresponding marks are not accounted on the official transcripts of students, however, the CGPA will denote their performance in the academic year.

The CGPA system provides students with an idea about their weaknesses and strengths. Moreover, it spares the students from getting preoccupied and become fussy about getting an elevated letter. The CGPA provides you with the required educational prerequisites to help them grab a good job and also mold them to become a better version of themselves.

Another great advantage of the CGPA system is based on its fundamental aspects of measuring the student’s knowledge through internal assignments, projects, their answering ability in class and their overall performance in all the major exams. Earlier with the percentage system, marks were the only indicators of determining whether a student is studying or not. However, CGPA focuses on whether a student is actually able to understand the subject concept.
