How to Convert CGPA to Marks

Every year millions of students appear in CBSE examinations, aiming to secure the best possible score. Calculating your marks is an important part of education, be it at the school or the college level. Marks play a crucial role when you’re looking for academic opportunities in foreign colleges and universities. Since the admission process demands for previous academic records to assess your candidature, you are required to know the different formats to express your academic score. While some universities look for the CGPA obtained, others may consider your overall marks. Through this blog, we will help you understand the easiest way to convert CGPA to marks.

What is a CGPA?

CGPA is quite a popular term that you must have heard at the time of your class 10th results. It stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average and is used to denote the overall average performance of students throughout their academic program in a year. CGPA is indicated by a ‘number’, unlike percentages and grades that are assigned under the Indian Grading System. For example, if you get an ‘A grade’ in a subject, then the marks obtained would range between ‘90-95’ and your CGPA calculated would be ‘9’.

If you add the grade points of every subject in a semester and then divide it by the total number of subjects, you can get the CGPA for that particular semester.

Advantages of the CGPA System

Before learning how to convert CGPA to marks, let us understand the merit of using a CGPA system. The main objective of this system is to reduce the academic pressure on students to a certain level. The real academic score and its corresponding marks are not accounted on the official transcripts of students, however, the CGPA will denote their performance in the academic year.

The CGPA system provides students with an idea about their weaknesses and strengths. Moreover, it spares the students from getting preoccupied and become fussy about getting an elevated letter. The CGPA provides you with the required educational prerequisites to help them grab a good job and also mould them to become a better version of themselves.

Another great advantage of the CGPA system is based on its fundamental aspects of measuring the student’s knowledge through internal assignments, projects, their answering ability in class and their overall performance in all the major exams. Earlier with the percentage system, marks were the only indicators of determining whether a student is studying or not. However, CGPA focuses on whether a student is actually able to understand the subject concept.

Now that you have got an idea about how CGPA is different from marks, let’s take a look at how you can convert your CGPA to marks.

An indicative equivalence of grade point and marks can be assessed as follows:

  • Subject wise indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 х GP of the subject.
  • Overall indicative percentage of the marks = 9.5 х CGPA

Let’s understand this through an example.

Assume that the following are the various grade points you have achieved in different subjects:

If a student has secured A2 grade CGPA, then the overall indicative percentage of the marks = 9.5 х CGPA, which is 9.5 х 9 = 85.5

If a student has secured B1 grade in Physics, then the indicative percentage of marks in Physics = 9.5 х GP of the subject, which is 9.5 х 8 = 76.0

If a student has secured A1 grade in Maths, then the indicative percentage of marks in Maths = 9.5 х GP of the subject, which is 9.5 х 9 = 85.5
