History, Affiliations and Rankings

Since 1868, when a group of Civil War doctors envisioned a better society via better health, Wayne State has been an innovative urban centre of higher learning. Detroit Medical College was the name given to the university when it was founded. The Colleges of Liberal Arts, Education, Engineering, Medicine and Pharmacy, and the Graduate School were merged into a university organization, temporarily known as the Colleges of the City of Detroit, by the resolution of the Detroit Board of Education in 1933. Act 183 of the Michigan Public Acts of 1956 was renamed Wayne University Wayne State University. The Higher Learning Commission, a regional accrediting agency that reviews institutions based on the agency's standards, has granted Wayne State University accreditation. The university has academic affiliations with the Universities Research Association (URA),  University Research Corridor (URC), Great Cities' Universities (GCU) and Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (CUSU). Wayne State University secured the ranking of #511-520 in the latest QS World University Rankings. U.S. News and World Report ranked the University at #249 in National Universities (tie), #66 in Top Performers on Social Mobility (tie) and #123 in Top Public Schools (tie).

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

The university provides a unique educational experience in a city that has never been afraid to challenge the narrative, with a 200-acre main campus woven into the fabric of Detroit. The campus, located in Detroit's Midtown neighbourhood, consists of over 100 buildings with a total area of 11.7 million gross square feet. Students at Wayne State can enrol in classes on the main campus in Midtown or at one of six off-campus locations run by Educational Outreach. Satellite campuses allow students to take classes near their homes or places of work at a variety of hours. Clinton Township, Farmington Hills, Jackson, Livonia, and Warren all have satellite campuses. Wayne State University provides a total of 100 undergraduate degrees, divided into 79 majors and 26 main study areas. Psychology, International Business, Biology, Public Health, Computer and Information Sciences, Registered Nursing, and Finance are among the most popular majors at the University.

Accomplishments and Alumni 

For the previous eight years, the National Jurist and preLaw publications have named Wayne Law as a Best Value Law School. The Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences has a 100% employment placement rate for Clinical Laboratory Science graduates. U.S. News & World Report has ranked an online master's in criminal justice program as one of the best in the country. In 2021, the institution will receive $320 million in research awards, grants, and contracts. The college of Engineering at the institution was home to the country's first electric-drive car engineering program. Since 2016, WSU researchers have been awarded more than 150 patents. The list of achievements at the university is endless. Nearly 295,000 graduates live and work around the world as members of the university's alumni community. Larry Brilliant, an American epidemiologist, Wayne Dyer, an American author and S. Epatha Merkerson, an American film actress are among the university's notable alumni.

The university has a total enrollment of 25,000 students. The institution employs 3,000 full-time academic experts. This international campus in the heart of Midtown Detroit is home to over 1,100 international students from 80 different nations.
