About the University

History, Affiliations and Rankings

Established in 1891, California Institute of Technology was started as a vocational college, previously known as Throop University. In 1920, the Institute acquired its current name. Since 2000, the Einstein Papers Project has been placed at Caltech. The project was started in 1986 to assemble, preserve, translate, and publish papers chosen from the literary estate of Albert Einstein and from other collections. In 2012, Caltech started to provide classes with Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) under Coursera, and edX. California Institute of Technology has academic affiliations with AAU, URA, AITU and APRU. It is also one of the sun-grant colleges and has sporting affiliations with NCAA Division III – SCIAC. California Institute of Technology ranks #6 in QS World University Rankings 2022 and #2 in World University Rankings 2022 by Times Higher Education 2022.
