History, Affiliations and Rankings

University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) was established in the year 1982 with its roots tracing back to the 19th century. The University of Illinois Chicago has its roots in a number of private health colleges created in the late 1800s, including the Chicago College of Pharmacy, which opened in 1859, the College of Physicians and Surgeons (1882), and the Columbian College of Dentistry (1893). The University of Illinois was established at Champaign-Urbana in 1867 as the state's land-grant university. The Chicago-based health colleges joined the university in 1896-97, eventually becoming completely integrated into the University of Illinois as the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy in 1913. Medical education and research advanced in the ensuing decades, culminating in the construction of multiple other health science colleges, which were amalgamated to become the Chicago Professional Colleges.
