History, Affiliations and Rankings
Founded in 1809, Miami University is a public residential university. It is the second oldest public university in Ohio and the tenth oldest public university in the United States. In addition to the main campus in Oxford, the university has regional centres in Hamilton, Middletown and West Chester and an international centre in Luxembourg. The university is named for the original Native American tribe that once lived in the Miami Valley region of Ohio, and maintains affiliations with the tribe now located in Oklahoma. Founded in 1809 and opening its doors to its first group of students in 1824, Miami is now considered one of the oldest public universities in the country. The newest regional campus, Miami University's Voice of America Learning Centre, also opened in West Chester in 2009. In 2014, the Armstrong Student Centre was completed to replace the repurposed Shriver Centre. It is affiliated with GC3 and Space-grant. It is ranked #103 in National Universities, #62 in Best Colleges for Veterans and #22 in Best Undergraduate Teaching.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
The university's main campus stretches over 6,500 acres and has been dubbed "The most beautiful campus ever" by Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Frost. The naturally beautiful campus features academic buildings, apartments, an alumni hall, an administration complex, an auditorium, sports facilities, libraries and a museum. The campus provides housing for students, and all freshmen and sophomores live on campus. Campus student accommodation offers students all the comfort and facilities. There are 30 restaurants on campus, recreational facilities such as rock climbing, music centres, swimming pools and a gym. There are over 400 student clubs and organisations to join. Miami University offers over 120 undergraduate and 70 graduate degree programs. The university's various colleges and schools include the College of Arts and Science, Farmer Business School, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Education, Health and Society, College of Engineering and Computing, College of Liberal Arts and Applied Sciences and the Graduate School. Accomplishments and Alumni
Miami University is a research-intensive university. Each year, more than 2,000 undergraduate students work tirelessly alongside professors on various research programs. The university has worked with government, industry and agencies to conduct research and development, technology transfer and sponsored research programs. It is truly a global university as students come from all over the world to study here. The university offers international exposure through study abroad programs. In addition to being a place of academic excellence, the University of Miami is also a centre for athletic, cultural and recreational activities. It has multi-disciplinary gyms, athletic fields and courts, art galleries, theatres, studios, and more. Some of the notable alumni are Benjamin Harrison (Former US president), Paul Ryan (Politician), Mike DeWine (Governor).
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
It is home to more than 17,327 undergraduates and more than 2,607 graduate students from more than 79 countries. As of 2020, Miami University has a total of 22,971 admitted undergraduate enrollments. The Oxford campus has 18,669 students, of which 16,522 are undergraduates and 2,147 are graduates and professionals. For Fall 2021 admissions offerings, 44% of students were from Ohio, with offerings for students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 122 countries abroad. Miami University has 1,614 international students from 67 countries. Some of the recruiting companies are Cincinnati Museum Centre, Sherwin William, JP Morgan Chase and Co.
