History, Affiliations and Rankings
Kathmandu University is an autonomous public university in Nepal. It is the third oldest university in Nepal and is located in Dhulikhel in Kavrepalanchok district, about 30 km east of Kathmandu. It was founded in 1991 under the motto "Quality Education for Leadership". Kathmandu University has developed close relationships with many leading institutions such as Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Nobel Medical College, Nepal College of Management and National College. It is also affiliated with many international institutions such as Dhaka University, Jinan University and Aarhus University. Aside from that, some of the university's non-academic affiliations are with organizations such as the Aquatic Ecological Centre, Danida, the Korea International Cooperation Agency, and the WWF. The university's predecessor was the Kathmandu Valley Campus, established in 1985. The campus began as a private campus affiliated with Tribhuvan University offering Intermediate Level (I.SC) Science courses. Kathmandu University started its academic program in 1992 with an Intermediate Science program. It is ranked at #3978 in the world, #1343 in Asia and #2 in Nepal.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
The university's world-class campus is equipped with a wealth of student-friendly facilities. The university's central campus, based in Dhulikhel, has a canteen that runs the university's dormitory dining room on a cooperative basis. The hostels provide a safe environment for students and are equipped with amenities such as a sports field, TV and exercise machines. International students live in a guest house located on the university campus. Kathmandu University offers education in seven schools, School of Arts (KUSoA), School of Education (KUSoEd), School of Engineering (KUSoE), School of Law (KUSoL), School of Management (KUSOM), School of Medical Sciences (KUSMS), School of Science (KUSOS). Kathmandu University has proposed two new schools in Panchkhal parish, among which the agriculture program has been temporarily started in Panchkhal while KUKUNJ will do so very soon, School of Agriculture (KUSoAg) and School of Forestry (KUSoF). The university offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Engineering, Science, Management, Arts, Education, Law, and Medical Sciences. It offers undergraduate courses in Chemical Engineering , Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Pharmacy, Human Biology, Bachelors in Business Administration, Executive MBA, Masters in Business Administration, Music, Media, MBBS, MD, MS, Nursing.
Accomplishments and Alumni
The university runs the Centre for Buddhist Studies in cooperation with the Rangjung Yeshe Institute. The Centre offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs leading to Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Buddhist Studies and Himalayan Languages. It provides research facilities for visiting international scholars of Buddhism for their undergraduate or postgraduate projects. In the summer, it hosts study abroad programs and conducts intensive language immersion programs in Tibetan, Nepali and Sanskrit. Kathmandu University has worked tirelessly to bring out the best talent for this world. Today, many of its alumni lead lucrative careers in their respective fields. The university strives to maintain good contact with its former students. Petr Kroutil (Czech musician), Bhola Thapa (Vice-Chancellor of the Kathmandu University), Sweta Shrestha (Researcher) are some of the notable alumni of the university.
