Eligibility Criteria in Civil Engineering
If you’re thinking of pursuing a career in Civil Engineering, you must first earn an undergraduate degree (BTech), following which you can either seek employment or continue a postgraduate program in the same field. A Diploma in Civil Engineering is also offered at some colleges around the world.
Diploma in Civil Engineering
Civil engineering diploma programs of about two-year-long are offered by many colleges and universities.
Eligibility – Aspirants must have completed class X or an equivalent examination with a minimum of 45% in each of the obligatory subjects of Science and Mathematics. Students must have studied English as a compulsory subject in their schooling.
BTech Civil Engineering
It is a four-year full-time undergraduate program.
Eligibility – Students must have completed a 10th and 12th or equivalent examination with Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, as obligatory subjects from any recognized central or state board. Admission is also based on the result of entrance exams such as JEE Main, JEE Advanced, MHCET, KCET, etc.
MTech Civil Engineering
It is a full-time, two-year post-graduate program.
Eligibility – Students must have earned a BTech degree with a minimum passing grade in all disciplines covered throughout their undergraduate program. Results of the entrance exams have a huge emphasis on the admission of a candidate, such as the GATE score merit list.
Civil Engineering Specializations
Civil engineers earn a civil engineering degree from a reputed university. The program lasts three to five years, and the end result is a bachelor of technology or bachelor of engineering degree. Physics, design, project management, mathematics, and particular courses in civil engineering are all part of the curriculum. They continue on to high-level specialization in one or more sub-disciplines of civil engineering after studying fundamental courses in most sub-disciplines. While an undergraduate degree usually gives successful students an industry-accredited accreditation, certain academic institutions also offer post-graduate degrees, which allow students to specialize even more in their chosen field. Various specializations are –
Construction Engineering
Construction engineering constitutes the study of the design, planning, construction, and administration of infrastructures such as tunnels, roads, airports, trains, bridges, facilities, buildings, dams, and other projects.
Coastal and Ocean Engineering
Coastal and ocean engineering is a discipline of civil engineering that deals with the unique challenges of building near or on the coast, as well as the development of the coast and ocean.
Geotechnical Engineering
Geotechnical engineering, also known as geotechnics, deals with the engineering behaviour of earth materials. It employs soil and rock mechanics principles to find solutions to various engineering challenges.
Fire Protection Engineering
The application of engineering and science principles to protect people, property, and their environs from the harmful and destructive impacts of fire and smoke is known as fire protection engineering.
Structural Engineering
Structural engineering is a sub-discipline of civil engineering that trains engineers to design the ‘bones and muscles’ that give man-made structures their form and shape.
General Engineering
General engineering is a science and technology field that deals with the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of engines, equipment, and structures. Electrical, chemical, mechanical, civil, architectural, and computer engineering are some of the subcategories.
Bridge Engineering
Bridge engineering is a civil engineering profession that entails the planning, design, building, operation, and maintenance of bridges in order to enable the safe and efficient passage of cars, people, and products.
Irrigation Engineering
Irrigation Engineering is the science of planning and developing an effective, low-cost, and cost-effective irrigation system that is matched to the needs of the environment.
Land Development Engineering
A civil engineer who specializes in land development assists in the planning of residential, commercial, industrial, and mixed-use developments. In this position, you will examine the land to ensure that it can sustain the intended development and determine the feasibility of a development project.
Materials Engineering
At the atomic level, materials engineers make and research materials. Computers are used to comprehend and model the properties of materials and their components. Mechanical, electrical, chemical, nuclear, civil and aerospace engineers work together in order to address challenges in different technical domains.
Transportation Engineering
Transportation engineering is the application of technology and scientific principles to the planning, functional design, operation, and management of facilities for any mode of transportation in order to ensure the safe, efficient, rapid, comfortable, convenient, economical, and environmentally friendly movement of people and goods. It is also known as transportation planning.
Urban Engineering
In an urban setting, municipal or urban engineering employs the tools of science, art, and engineering. Municipal engineering is concerned with the infrastructure of municipalities.
Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering
Hydraulic engineering is a civil engineering sub-discipline that deals with the flow and conveyance of fluids, primarily water and sewage. The significant use of gravity as a driving factor to induce fluid movement is one aspect of these systems.
Environmental Engineering
Environmental engineering is a professional engineering discipline that combines broad scientific disciplines such as chemistry, biology, geology, ecology, microbiology, hydraulics, hydrology, and mathematics to develop solutions that protect and improve the health of living organisms along with improving the quality of the environment.
