About the University
History, Affiliations and Rankings
Established as the Territorial Normal School, Arizona State University was Arizona’s first institution of higher education, which began with only 33 students in a four-classroom building in Tempe in 1886. From becoming a University in 1958 and setting the stage for the “New American University,” to being recognized as USA’s Most Innovative University for 7 years in a row, Arizona State has become a leading knowledge enterprise in America and the world. It has produced Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners and Fulbright scholars. Recognized also for its value, global impact, research power, entrepreneurship and innovation, ASU is affiliated with the Conceive Design Implement and Operate Initiative (CDIO), Universities Research Association (URA) and is also a member of the Space-grant colleges in the United States. According to Times Higher Education World University Rankings, ASU ranks #132, while the US News and World ranks the University at #165 in Best Global Universities category.
