History, Affiliations and Rankings
The University of Debrecen is a university in Debrecen, Hungary. It is the oldest continuously operating university in Hungary since 1538. The university has a well-established English language program for international students mainly in the field of Medicine, which established English-language training for the first time in 1986. On January 1, 2000, Hajdú-Bihar County Colleges and Universities, University of Agriculture, Lajos Kossuth University, and University of Medicine were merged. The resulting University of Debrecen had five universities and three university faculties and 20,000 students. Later the Debrecen Conservatory and the schools of the Universities of Hajdúböszörmény and Nyíregyháza joined. The Debrecen Summer School, founded in 1927, is also located on campus, although it is technically independent of the university. The school teaches Hungarian culture and Hungarian as a foreign language for foreigners, all year round. It is affiliated with the World Health Organisation, New York State Education Department, Medical Board of California, General Medicine Council of Great Britain and Medical Councils of Israel, Ireland, Iran and Norway. It is ranked at #748 in Best Global Universities, at #305 in Best Global Universities in Europe and #4 in Best Global Universities in Hungary.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
The university has four main campuses in Debrecen. The oldest is the main campus, which houses most of the faculties such as Science and Technology, Humanities, Music and Medicine. The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management and the Faculty of Economics are located on a smaller campus on Böszörményi Street. The third campus is on Ótemet? Street, where the Faculty of Engineering is located. The youngest campus is on Kassai Street, where the faculties of Law, Computer Science and Public Health are located. The University of Debrecen University and National Library (DEENK) is the second largest library in the country and one of the largest service units of the university. Accomplishments and Alumni
The cooperation of fourteen faculties ensures a multidisciplinary education, which guarantees the university a leading role as a research and educational institution and intellectual centre of Eastern Hungary. In 2007, our institution was the first to receive the highest degree of the Higher Education Qualification Award, given to the most prestigious Hungarian higher education institutions. Some of the notable alumni are Csaba Földes (Linguist), Nándor Berettyán (Theatre actor), Mária Filep (Hungarian architect).
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
The total number of students is 28,593, of which international students are 6,297. The total number of academic staff is 1,703, and the number of international staff is 126. The number of undergraduate degrees awarded is 2,773, number of master's degrees awarded is 1,477 and number of doctoral degrees awarded is 791. The number of research-only staff is 294, number of new undergraduate students 3,998, number of new master's students is 1,282, and number of new doctoral students is 1,169.
