University of Mississippi popularly known as "Ole Miss" is a public research university located adjacent to Oxford, Mississippi. Ole Miss is known to be the state’s second largest university by enrollment and is also the State's flagship university. The university was chartered on February 24, 1844 by the Mississippi Legislature. 4 years later it admitted its first enrollment of nearly 80 students and has since, grown into a Doctoral-degree granting University classified among the elite group of universities categorized among "R1 Doctoral Universities with High Research Activity" by Carnegie Classification. It was also the first ever University in the American South to hire a female faculty member. Ole Miss is affiliated with the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) and with the sea-grant and space-grant colleges in the United States. The University of Mississippi ranks in the bracket #801-1000 in the QS World University Rankings, #278 in Times Higher Education US Colleges Rankings, and #361 in US News and World Report Best Global Universities for the year 2022.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
The University of Mississippi has six campuses including, the main Oxford campus and five regional campuses in De Soto, Tupelo, Booneville, Grenada and Jackson. Recognized as one of the most beautiful campuses in the USA, the main University of Mississippi campus brings the best of Oxford, one of America's "coolest college towns." The campus facilities consist of the Fortune Gallery, Mary Buie Museum, University Gallery, Rowan Oak, Walton-Young Historic house. Academically, the University comprises 7 Schools and Colleges, including, an Honors College and a Graduate School, each offering Undergraduate and Graduate programs in distinct subject areas. These include, Liberal Arts, General Studies, Accountancy, Applied Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Health Professions, Journalism and New Media, Law, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy. There are around 70 Bachelor's programs and 39 Master's programs to choose from. Also, recently, 6 University of Mississippi students were awarded Fulbright Scholarships, which is a highly competitive and selective scholarship program, to conduct research across the world. Another PhD student from UM was selected among the 42 participants for the esteemed Summer Internship Program at the Library of Congress. Further, an Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Ole Miss, Davita Watkins was recently awarded the 2022 Rising Star Award by the American Chemical Society's Women Chemists Committee in recognition of her exceptional early to midcareer research and practice. The Alumni Association of the University of Mississippi records 1,20,000+ graduates living and working around the globe. Some of the notable alumni names are Tate Ellington (Actor), Patrick Eddie (NBA basketball player), James Meredith (American Civil Rights Activist), Mahesh Bhupathi (Indian Tennis Player), Mose Allison (Jazz Pianist) and Larry Brown (Author) among others.

The University of Mississippi has one of the largest student bodies in the United States comprising 18,800 students, out of which 15,000+ are undergraduates and 2,500+ are postgraduates. There are over 10,000 female students who outnumber male students on the campus. Out of the total student body, 3.7% are international students, while 750+ students attend the University from Asia.
