The University of Western Australia (UWA) was founded in 1911 by an act of the Western Australian Parliament and began educating students two years later. It is Australia's 6th oldest institution, and until the creation of Murdoch University in 1973, it was Western Australia's sole university. UWA is known as one of the "sandstone universities" because of its antiquity and renown. Sandstone universities are the oldest institutions in each state. The University opened in 1913 and admitted just 184 students. Today, more than 25,000 students are enrolled from 100 countries. It is affiliated with the National Union of Students (NUS). For more than 100 years, they have contributed to the intellectual, cultural and economic development of Western Australia. The University of Western Australia (UWA) is among the top 1% of universities in the world and the first in Western Australia. US News & World Report has ranked UWA #79, while QS World University Rankings has ranked it #92. Times Higher Education World University ranking for UWA for 2022 is #132, a climb of 7 places from #139 in 2021.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

Australia's first university, the University of Western Australia, is located in Perth. The University has an additional campus at Crawley. Initially, the university started with only 184 students, but now it has more than 25000 students. The University provides Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral programs in a range of subjects, including Education, Law, Business, Philosophy etc. The university's campus spans 160 acres of land. It boasts a diverse range of sports, cultural, alumni, and social clubs, as well as substantial art collections and theatre venues. The institution provides on-campus housing for students. In addition, the campus houses six major libraries, including the Reid Library, which is Australia's largest library. Perth and UWA provide an inspiring study environment. Since 2011, the UWA Business School has held AACSB accreditation, as well as EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) accreditation since 2008, making the University one among the 777 AACSB-accredited schools in 52 countries and 167 EQUIS-accredited schools in 41 countries at the moment. Further, the University ranks #1 in Western Australia for Graduate Employability and has received 23 Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning. Fiona Wood (2005 Australian of the Year), Rod Eddington (Former CEO of Ansett Airlines), Stephen Smith (Former Labor Federal Minister), Cheryl Praeger (Scientist of the Year, 2009), and Tim Minchin (Australian Comedian) are among UWA's famous graduates.

The Student Guild at the University of Western Australia is the primary student representation group on campus.
