All about the SAT

Before dwelling on our main question of whether or not UK universities require SAT, let us first quickly brush up on our knowledge on SAT. First and foremost, the SAT or the Scholastic Assessment Test is an American exam that was created with an American audience in mind. The SAT can be taken by students of Class 11th and 12th grade who wish to apply for further studies abroad. Though SAT is considered non-mandatory in some institutes of the UK but somewhere it is required. It includes – Maths and English sections of reading & writing. A student must score well in order to be placed in the university of his or her own choice. The maximum total score is 2400. Each section of the SAT is scored on a 200-800 point scale.

Do UK Universities Require SAT?

You will not have to take the SAT for UK university admissions if you are a student in the UK or if you are studying under a GCSE/O-level/A-level system. If you’re a foreign applicant, such as an Indian, who wants to study in the United Kingdom, you can take the SAT/ACT and send it to most British universities, where it will be approved.

Note: Some British colleges, such as Oxford University and Cambridge University, require individual subject tests in addition to a minimum SAT/ACT score for the major/concentration you apply to. If you want to study or pursue Mathematics at Oxford, for example, you must take the MAT (Mathematics Admissions Test), which is a two-and-a-half-hour long exam. If you do well, you will be called in for an interview.

In summary, most UK colleges recognise the SAT; however, most candidates do not submit an SAT/ACT score because they are not required to take one.
