NCERT Class 6 English Honeysuckle Unit 7 Story: Fair Play
This story is about two friends, Jumman and Algu. They were very close and helped each other’s families when one of them was away. Jumman’s old aunt gave him some property, but later, Jumman and his family treated her badly. She asked for a little money to have her own kitchen, but Jumman refused.
The aunt went to the panchayat for help. Some people advised her to make up with Jumman, but Algu, their friend, decided to speak the truth at the council. He became the Panch or the head of the panchayat for this case. At the panchayat, both Jumman and his aunt explained their sides. Algu and the panchayat decided that Jumman should give his aunt some money each month, or the property would go back to her.
Later, Algu had a problem with a bullock he sold, and it died. He asked for money, but the buyer refused. The buyer was a cart driver of the village- Samjhu Sahu. They went to the panchayat again, and this time, the buyer suggested Jumman to be the Panchl. Jumman remembered his duty as a Panch. He decided that the buyer should pay Algu for the bullock because it wasn’t Algu’s fault it died. Algu was very happy and thanked the panchayat.
Afterward, Jumman realized he shouldn’t have been enemies with Algu. They hugged and forgave each other. They learned that justice is more important than friendship or enmity.

- The aunt’s circumstances in Jumman’s home changed. She was cared for earlier, but then the situation changed, and she experienced ill-treatment.
- She recommended that since she could no longer take the insult, Jumman provided her with a monthly allowance. She desired her own kitchen.
- In order to present her cause and gain their support, Jumman’s aunt visited several villagers. However, some expressed pity while others made fun of her. Some suggested that she should make up with Jumman.
- Jumman and Algu were best of friends. Jumman therefore hoped for a favourable judgement. He naturally became happy when the aunt chose Algu to serve as head Panch.
- The aunt meant that once seated as a Panch, a person becomes impartial and like God. He is not influenced by his own preferences. He is incapable of doing wrong. He is the agent of God.
- As the Panch, Algu ruled that Jumman must either pay a monthly allowance to his aunt or return back her property. Jumman was surprised by the judgement and became Algu’s enemy. Therefore, he decided to avenge Algu.
- Village cartman Samjhu Sahu bought the bullock from Algu. Within a month, Sahu committed to pay the cost. But throughout this time, he overworked the bullock because of which it died. Sahu started to lie. He objected to paying money to Algu and held him responsible for the death of the bullock.
- Algu was upset because Jumman had already become his enemy after the aunt’s case. So he thought Jumman might take revenge.
- Jumman’s decision was that Sahu would have to pay the price of the bullock to Algu the bullock. Because the bullock was healthy and whole when Sahu bought it from Algu. This was a fair play. Algu accepted it with joy and declared that the panchayat had won.

Summary of Poem: Vocation
This poem by Rabindranath Tagore expresses the poet’s imaginative desire to experience the carefree and unhurried lives of three different people: a hawker, a gardener, and a watchman.
The poem starts with the poet hearing a gong at ten in the morning, signalling the start of his day. He observes a hawker selling crystal bangles every day as he walks to school. The hawker’s life is shown as a relaxed one. Also, the poet thinks the hawker is in no hurry to reach anywhere or his home. The hawker’s freedom inspires the poet. Therefore, he wishes he could live such a carefree life.
Whereas, in the afternoon, when the poet returns from school around four, he sees a gardener at work. The gardener is depicted as someone who enjoys his job thoroughly. He digs in the garden with his spade. He is not concerned about getting dirty or dusty. Also, nobody supervises him or looks after his task. The poet is in awe of the gardener’s commitment to his work. Therefore, he desires to be in the gardener’s shoes, enjoying the simple pleasures of gardening.
Thereafter, in the evening, the poet’s mother sends him to bed. This is when he observes a watchman through his open window. The watchman’s duty is to patrol the dark and lonely lane. The streetlamp, described as a giant with a single red eye, lights up the area. The watchman carries a lantern, and he walks alongside his shadow. His job requires him to stay awake all night, never experiencing the comfort of sleep. The poet is fascinated by the hardships and duties of the watchman. Thus, he expresses a wish to be the watchman, chasing shadows with a lantern.
