Summary of NCERT Class 6 English Chapter 6: The Wonder Called Sleep

In this NCERT Class 6 English Chapter 6, we learn about sleep and its importance for our health. In addition, we also explore what are dreams and how dreams function.

What is Sleep?

Sleep is a special state where our body rests without us knowing exactly why it happens. When we sleep, our body gets a chance to recover from the tiredness of the day. After a good sleep, we feel fresh, active, and ready for the day.

Sometimes, when we wake up in the morning, we cannot remember what happened while we were asleep. We might recall a dream, but the rest of our sleep feels like a kind of darkness where nothing seems to happen.

While we sleep, our body goes through some changes. Our muscles relax more, our heartbeat slows down, and our temperature and blood pressure drop. Even our busy brain slows down, so we cannot think or act consciously. But we still dream.

When we wake up, our body returns to its normal state. Our temperature, blood pressure, heartbeat, and breathing become normal, and we are fully awake. We tend to forget most, if not all, of the dreams we had.

Sleep is something we all experience, but not many of us really think about how amazing and powerful it is. Thus, It is a wonderful and important part of our lives!

What are Dreams?

Dreams are like activities of our mind that happen when we are asleep. Some dreams could happen in real life, while others are not likely. Dreams serve important purposes. They can help us sleep through noises or disruptions. For example, if an alarm clock rings, our mind might make us dream that a telephone is ringing, making us think we’re already awake and answering it.

Some doctors believe that our dreams can tell a lot about our problems, and understanding them can help solve those problems. But it is important to remember that dreams cannot predict the future. They simply cannot do that.

Summary of NCERT Class 6 English A Pact with the Sun Chapter 6 Poem: Lights Out

This poem by Edward Thomas is about the feeling of coming close to falling asleep. It compares this state to entering a deep, mysterious forest where everyone will eventually get lost, no matter how careful. In this place, no familiar book or even the most loved face could keep the speaker from going into the unknown. They have to face it on their own. However, they are not sure how they will enter or leave this state of sleep.

Thus, the poem captures the sense of submitting to the unknown. Also, it shows us how to embrace the mystery of falling asleep.
