Summary of NCERT Class 6 English A Pact with the Sun Chapter 1: A Tale of Two Birds
Once upon a time, there was a mother bird with two baby birds in a forest. They lived happily in a tall tree until a big storm knocked it down. The mother bird sacrificed herself to save her babies. The wind carried the babies to different parts of the forest.
As they grew up, one of them ended up near a cave with robbers, while the other landed near a wise man’s ashram. One day, the king got lost in the forest while hunting. He encountered both birds.
The first bird, influenced by the robbers, tried to trick the king, but the king got away. The second bird, living near the ashram, welcomed the king and guided him to the rishi or the wise man.
The rishi explained that the birds acted differently because of the company they kept. The one near the robbers learned their ways, while the one near the ashram learned kindness and hospitality. The story teaches us that our behavior can be influenced by the people we surround ourselves with i.e. “One is known by the company it keeps”.

Ques 1. How did the two baby birds get separated?
Ans: The two baby birds lived in a nest in a tall and shady tree with their mother. One day, a storm and thunder and lightning struck down the tree. Unfortunately, the strong wind blew away the tree. Due to this, the next blew away and both the birds got separated.
Ques 2. Where did each of them find a home?
Ans: After being separated from each other, one bird landed near a cave and the other one came near an ashram. The one who landed near the cave started living with the robbers who used to stay there. Whereas, the one who was flown near the ashram was in the company of a rishi.
Ques 3. What did the first bird say to the stranger?
Ans: The first bird saw the stranger i.e. the King and called for the robbers. The bird told the robbers to come and take away the jewels of the stranger sitting underneath the tree.

Ans: The second bird welcomed the stranger i.e. the king to the rishi’s ashram. The bird asked him to go inside and have some cold water. Also, it asked the stranger to rest and make himself comfortable. Furthermore, it also said that the first one is his brother who is friends with the robbers so he talks and behaves like them.
Ques 5. How did the ‘rishi’ explain the different ways in which the birds behaved?
Ans: As the king was surprised by the difference in behaviour of the two brothers he asked the reason behind this. To this, the rishi explained that the first bird lives with them and behaves like them, whereas the second one lives with him so he acts like a wise one. Thus, the difference between their behaviours is due to the companies in which they live.
