Summary of Class 6 English Chapter 7: A Pact with the Sun

The story revolves around Saeeda’s mother, who has been sick for a long time with various diseases. She has been treated by different doctors, but her condition keeps fluctuating. Despite being weak and pale, she is living in a small, dark room without sunlight or fresh air.

When her condition worsens, her relatives and neighbors advise her to consult a specialist, even though it would be expensive. They emphasize that life is more important than money. Saeeda’s mother, though poor, sells some of her belongings to afford the doctor’s fee and medicine.

The specialist prescribes costly but effective medicine. Also, he advises her to eat a balanced diet including chapati, vegetables, milk, and fruits. Further, he emphasizes the importance of sunlight and fresh air, stating they are even more crucial than medicine.

This advice sparks a heated discussion among those present. Some support the doctor’s recommendation. Whereas, others believe it is dangerous for someone with a chronic cough to be exposed to sun and air. Saeeda’s mother, tired but determined, decides to follow the doctor’s advice without worrying about the consequences.

Unfortunately, the sky remains cloudy the next morning. This disappointed Saeeda’s mother. However, using a special language that children have, Saeeda communicates with the sun, asking it to bring warmth and brightness for her mother’s sake.

The next morning, the sun’s rays are eager to reach the earth. But, an army of thick clouds blocks their way. Nevertheless, one ray, committed to helping Saeeda’s mother, pierces through the clouds with determination, causing a stir among the other rays. Eventually, they all make their way to Earth.

When Saeeda sees the sun’s rays approaching, she joyfully calls her mother out. The sight of the sun brings tears of gratitude to her mother’s eyes. Her bed is moved to the courtyard, and she basks in the sunlight for an hour. With this, she feels as if she is in a new world. Her face glows, her eyes shine, and she kisses her child. The fresh air carries the fragrance of nearby flowers, and the birds sing a new tune. Thus, Saeeda’s mother starts feeling better.

In the end, the story reveals that Saeeda’s mother has fully recovered. But, she continues to follow the doctor’s advice, spending an hour in sunlight and taking in ample fresh air every day.
