The Full Form of RPF is the Railway Protection Force. The RPF is an armed security force formed by the RPF Act of 1957 to protect the railway areas and passengers. Moreover, the RPF now has more than 75,000 personnel and all officers of the RPF are members of the Indian Railway Protection Force Service (IRPFS). The Indian Railways, the Ministry of Railways, and the Government of India are the governing bodies of the RPF. The RPF headquarters is in New Delhi with Manoj Yadava as the Director General.

What is the Qualification for RPF?

Additionally, the recruitment of RPF personnel is through the UPSC Civil Services Examination. The qualification for RPF is:

  • The candidates applying need to have an undergraduate degree from a recognized university and also need to meet the minimum qualifying mark in any field of study. 
  • Moreover, candidates have to be proficient in Hindi till class 10 from any state or central board in India. 
  • The general applicants need to be between 18 to 27 years old. For OBC applicants there is a relaxation period of 2 years and for ST/SC applicants 5 years. 
  • Notably, applicants who are in their last year of graduation are also qualified to apply for the RPF.

What are the Roles and Responsibilities of the RPF?

Furthermore, the Roles and Responsibilities of the RPF are as follows:

  • Security and Protection: The RPF guarantees the safety of passengers and railway property.
  • Crime Prevention: They detect and prevent crimes on the railway premises.
  • Crowd Management: Additionally, the management of crowds during peak hours and special events is their responsibility.
  • Law Enforcement: The RPF enforces laws under the Railways Act of 1890 that are related to railways and passenger safety.
  • Emergency Response: Moreover, the response to accidents, disasters, and emergencies on railway tracks is by the RPF.
  • Surveillance: They monitor and patrol to identify and address security threats.
  • Collaboration: There is coordination with local law enforcement for seamless security operations.
  • Public Assistance: The RPF assists passengers with information and emergencies.
  • Asset Protection: Lastly, the RPF safeguards railway assets from theft and vandalism.
