What is the Full Form of UPSC?

The full form of UPSC is Union Public Service Commission. The UPSC exam is one of the most difficult in the country. While Union Public Service Commission is the most prestigious and significant exam-conducting authority. The Union Public Service Commission holds different tests to choose qualified applicants for positions in the Indian government. It also holds the IAS exam. This exam is divided into two parts: UPSC prelims and mains. The preliminary test in this paper will be objective-based, whilst the main exam will be descriptive in character. It also includes the drafting of essays. The UPSC is also in charge of administering several examinations for positions such as  IFS, IAS, IPS, and others.

Functions of UPSC

The UPSC’s tasks are addressed in Article 320 of the constitution. The UPSC’s primary responsibility is to conduct examinations for appointments to the union’s services. The UPSC also performs the following functions:

• In the creation of diverse recruiting strategies.
• Consultation on recruiting, appointment, pension claim, promotion or transfer, disciplinary cases, or other problems referred to them.

UPSC History

The Royal Commission on Superior Civil Service was established in 1923 under the presidency of Lord Lee of Fareham, with an equal number of British and Indian members. The Public Service Commission was established in 1924 on the basis of the report provided by the Royal Commission on Superior Civil Service.

The following are some of the Lee Commission’s significant recommendations:

• 40% of future recruitment should be British.
• 20% of provisional service Indians should be promoted.

Finally, on October 1, 1926, the first Public Service Commission was established under the presidency of Sir Ross Barker. It was a small advisory committee with little power. As a result, with the assistance of the Government of India Act 1935, the Federal Union Public Service Commission became the Union Public Service Commission, or UPSC, after independence on January 26, 1950.
