Fully Funded Japan Africa Dream Scholarship

Japan Africa Dream Scholarship (JADS) is a program launched by the African Development Bank and the government of Japan. The goal is to increase human resource capacity in Africa keeping in mind the 5 strategic principles of the bank. Namely, feed Africa, light up and power Africa, Industrialize Africa, Integrate Africa, and improve Africans’ quality of life. It is in line with the Japanese development initiatives.

The two-year scholarship is given to high-achieving African students to pursue their postgraduate studies in energy, agriculture, health, environmental sustainability, and engineering. The African development bank scholarship is open to students from regional member countries with relevant educational and professional experience. After the completion of their studies, the students are required to go back to their respective countries to contribute to the country’s socioeconomic development.

Scholarship Benefits For Students

The Scholarship Benefits for students and what it does and does not provide students are listed below:

What Does it Cover?

The Japan Africa dream scholarship 2022 covers the following:

The tuition fee of 2 years
Living expenses for the duration of the program
Air travel from the home country to the country that a student wishes to study
Six months advance study period or internship period granted after the completion of graduation
Health insurance is given by the university
Special grant for research and thesis preparation if applicable
Computer literacy, preparatory language, and similar course expenses may be covered under special circumstances.

What it Does NOT Cover?

The scholarship does not cover the following expenses:

Family members expenses
Extra-curricular training expenses
Language training is not listed under the japan scholarship 2023
Expenses are required for supplementary educational materials, field trips, participation in workshops, and other expenses such as purchasing a computer.

The Japan Africa dream scholarship (JADS) program only adds and does not duplicate any other financial support that you might have. All students who are selected for the scholarship program have to disclose their other sources of finance to the JADS secretariat. At this stage, the scholarship offer may be fully or partially withdrawn.

Eligibility Criteria

The following are the JADS scholarship eligibility requirements. However, it is not applicable to students already living or studying in a country other than their home country.

Be a healthy citizen of the Afdb member country
Should be 35 or younger than 35 years old
Bachelor’s degree in the energy area or an equivalent degree of at least 1 year prior to the date of application
A minimum of 1year of development-related experience after studies
Have an unconditional acceptance letter from the JADS partner universities for an M.A. degree.
Not to be enrolled in a graduate degree program
Not to be associated with the African Development Bank Group as the staff, executive director, or his/her alternate. A close relative of the aforementioned will also not be considered for the scholarship.

Selection Process

Japan Africa dream scholarship 2022/2023 selection process involves quality checking of the following. It is done to identify the best candidates for the scholarship program.

Educational background
Professional experience
Professional recommendation
Commitment to the home country, and
The statement of purpose

The finalists are selected by the JADS secretariat using the below criteria

Taking into consideration of the geographical distribution of the eligible candidates
Ensuring that there is a reasonable distribution of awards across gender
Taking into consideration candidates with limited financial resources
Taking into consideration the unusual circumstances or hardships of the student

The JADS secretariat gives the list of students on a rolling basis to the executive director of AFDB. He/she is responsible for the approval of the scholarship that is in alignment with the JADS partner universities’ admission cycle. The finalists are called for a seminar and the secretariat informs the name of the winners of the partner universities.

How to apply for the scholarship?

A student can apply for the Japan Africa dream scholarship by following the steps given below.

Request for the scholarship information and the application form from the chosen JADS partner university.
Submit the relevant documents to the chosen university
In the next stage, the university selects the applicants for scholarships and sends the list to AFDB. The AFDB then shares the name of the scholarship awardees with the respective universities.
