Stanford University recently released its exclusive list of top 2% of the world’s most cited scientists across various disciplines. The list includes a total number of 1,59,683 scientists and featured the name of almost 1500 Indian scientists! What comes as a pleasant surprise is that as many as 36 scientists on Stanford’s world’s top 2% scientist list are from two Indian Institute of Technology (IIT’s). The list compiled by Stanford University comprises 14 professors from IIT-Banaras Hindu University and 22 researchers from IIT- Guwahati. The total number of Indian doctors, scientists and engineers that made their way into the list was 1,492. All these scientists have been mentioned in the list of world’s top 2% scientists because of all the research work they have done.
Stanford’s World’s Top 2% Scientists List
The list was prepared by professor John PA Loannidis and his team by grouping all the researchers under 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields. The list was designed based on standardised citation indicators which include information on citations, H-index, co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator.

The 14 IIT-BHU researchers featured in Stanford’s world’s top 2% scientist list are:

- Yogesh Chandra Sharma and PC Pandey (Chemistry Department)
- Brahmeshwar Mishra, Sanjay Singh, SK Singh and MS Muthu (Pharmaceutical Engineering and Technology)
- Devendra Kumar (Ceramic Engineering)
- Subir Das (Mathematical Sciences)
- Rakesh Kumar Singh (Physics)
- Zahra Sarkar (Mechanical Department)

IIT-Guwahati
The team of IIT-Guwahati researchers in Stanford’s World’s Top 2% Scientists List was led by Professor TG Sitharam, Director IIT Guwahati and have been listed because of their research publications citations 2019 and their lifetime contributions to the field of research.
“This recognition of several faculty in the world’s top 2% scientist list has placed IIT Guwahati on the global map and has brought great pride to the institute, I congratulate all the 22 scientists and their hard work and commitment to furthering science,” said Professor TG Sitharam in an interview.
The researchers from IIT Guwahati featured in Stanford’s world’s top 2% scientist list are from varied fields such as Departments of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Biosciences and Bioengineering, Chemistry, Electrical and Electronics.
