List of IITs

The Indian Institute of Technology, currently 23 in number, needs no introduction. Pursuing engineering from IITs has always been a matter of prestige for students across India. Counted amongst the toughest exams in the world, getting admission to an institute where every engineering aspirant dreams of isn’t a piece of cake. The IITs, since 1951, have been operating in different parts of the country and are ranked among the top engineering colleges in India and abroad. This was also visible in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). Indian Institute of Technology, Madras – NIRF #1

Established in 1959, the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras is one of the country’s leading institutes of technological education, which began with the aid of the German Government. The institute, which is at the top of the list of IITs, consists of 16 academic departments and a few research centres for different engineering and science disciplines.

Some of the most popular engineering branches the IIT Madras is known for are Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Metallurgical and Materials, Naval Architecture and Ocean, Computer Science and Engineering Physics. The IIT Madras ranks 1st in India according to the NIRF 2020 rankings and 17th according to QS BRICS University Rankings.

Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi  – NIRF #2

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, located in the national capital of India, was founded in 1961. Considered to be one of the oldest in the list of IITs, the institute has pioneered technical education through its highly qualified academic staff.

IIT-D provides students with enriched expertise in a number of disciplines through dedicated departments. If an aspiring candidate seeks an MBA in the IITs, IIT-D takes the lead in its business administration courses. Some of the prominent specialisations offered by IIT Delhi include Applied Mechanics, Chemical, Biochemical, Electrical, Computer Science, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Textile Technology and non-scientific fields such as Architecture, Humanities, Social Sciences, Management Studies, etc. Recently awarded the title of Institute of Eminence(IoE), this well known IIT institution has also been ranked #193 in QS Global World Rankings of 2021.

Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay – NIRF #3

Having been named the Institute of National Importance by the Government of India in 1961, IIT-Bombay has been among the top ranks in the list of IITs. It has always held an extraordinary record of outstanding achievements in the field of engineering and academia. Founded in 1958, the Institute has made a long way to establish itself as one of the most prestigious engineering colleges in India and abroad. 

From BTech and Masters in Management to MBA and PhD, IIT-Bombay is renowned for offering specialisations such as Earth Sciences, Industrial Design, Metallurgy, Aerospace Engineering, Energy Sciences, Bioscience and Bioengineering, etc. IIT-Bombay has been ranked #172 in the QS Global World Rankings of 2021.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur – NIRF #4

Out of the list of IITs, the Kanpur campus of the Indian Institute of Technology is known for its high quality education and has continued to inspire students to think critically and use humanitarian scientific expertise to find solutions to complex problems. 

In addition to its Aerospace Engineering curriculum, it is also recognised for a broad variety of other courses such as Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, Civil Engineering, General Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering,  Chemical Engineering, Business and Management, Computer Science Engineering, Economics and Econometrics, and Psychology courses. IIT Kanpur, popularly known as IIT-K is ranked 6th overall in the NIRF rankings and #65 in the Asia University Rankings.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur – NIRF #5

Located 120 kilometres west of the city of Kolkata and covering over 2,100 acres of land, IIT Kharagpur is the oldest in the IIT list. Founded in 1951, IIT Kharagpur, also known as IIT KGP, follows its own curriculum, which is entirely dedicated to the overall growth and development of students. 

Students have the option of enrolling in a range of degree programmes such as BTech, MTech, MBA, LLB, LLM, PGDBA and Integrated PhD in the best-in-class educational facilities. IIT Kharagpur has also been ranked #5 by NIRF in 2020 for Engineering Disciplines.

Eligiblity Criteira to Get Admission in IITs

Eligibility Criteria

Before looking at the list of IITs, it is important to understand the eligibility requirements that you need to follow in order to apply for the courses offered.

  • Candidates must have passed 12th standard or should have qualified in the 2019 or 2020 test. 
  • Aspiring applicants who are currently in 12th standard or equivalent qualifying exams in 2021 may also apply for JEE Main tests.
  • Students can appear in the JEE Main for three consecutive years and examination will be conducted twice a year.
