FAQs
The most popular MEC courses for commerce students are BBA, BCA, BCom, BMS (Bachelor of Management Studies), BBS (Bachelor of Business Studies), BA Mathematics, BA Economics, and BCom in Accounting and Finance, amongst others.
MEC is suitable for those interested in theoretical studies as well as business and management, but when compared with MPC, the MEC group is narrower in terms of career scope. With MPC, you can explore Engineering as well as Business and Management courses, while with MEC, you will be limited to the commerce stream. Thus, MEC is easier in terms of subjects and curriculum, but MPC offers a vast career scope.
There are many professional job prospects you can explore after MEC, such as Chartered Accountant, Business Analyst, Marketing Manager, Financial Manager, Financial Analyst, Statistician, Economist, Entrepreneur, Software Developer, etc.
The key advantage of selecting the MEC group is that it entails a multifarious range of career opportunities across lucrative areas such as Business, Management, Marketing, Accountancy, Finance, Information Technology, Economics and much more.
MEC (Maths, Economics, Commerce) can be a strong foundation for CA. The Commerce subjects provide a direct link to accounting and business, while Maths can help with the quantitative aspects of CA exams. However, specific CA coaching or an integrated BCom/BBA program with a CA focus is generally more direct.
No, MEC is generally considered to be easier than MPC (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry). But this also depends on your own interests and skills. If you go for MPC, you’ll find deep concepts and a lot of numerical problem solving, which involves a lot of analytical thinking. But if you like science in general, you’re good to go. Likewise is the case with MEC. If you like business and are interested in knowing what all goes on behind any business, you will find MEC easier.
Yes, you can switch streams later. But it can be a bit tricky in some cases. If you’ve just started your 11th grade and after a few weeks, you want to switch your stream, then it can be possible. It would also depend on the availability of seats. However, if you’re planning to switch your stream in 12th grade, then it will be very difficult. The reason is that you’ve missed out on your foundational year, and now it’ll be a bit difficult to grasp new subjects.
No, MEC isn’t compulsory for CA. If you want to do CA, you can pursue it from any stream after 12th grade. However, having MEC helps because then you’ll have a foundational knowledge of the commerce subjects that will help you in your CA journey.
No, it is not possible to pursue engineering after MEC. Engineering requires a science background with physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Without this academic background, you won’t meet the eligibility criteria.

Hey i have a doubt
MEC has been our favourite too when we were in college way back in 1977. The advantage is the student gets to know both Mathematics and Accountancy, both subjects of which seldom go together. If a student gets the basics of both then he would be able to complete Chartered Accountancy course fairly easily.
Thank you for your comment, we completely agree with you! MEC is an excellent course for students who wish to learn about maths and accounting.
