It’s really mind-boggling to know that each and every day is special in our history. Not a single has passed without any historical events attached to it! Let us recall the events that happened through the years on this day in history, June 20.

What Happened in India on June 20?

1756: Blackhole of Calcutta
Almost 146 British soldiers were captured by the Nawab of Bengal’s men. The Nawab at that time was Sirad ud-Daulah. Around 123 Britishers died later on due to cell suffocation.

1921: Four months Strike in the Spinning Mills of Chennai
The workers of the Spinning Department in the Buckingham and Carnatic Mills in Chennai, India announced an official four-month strike on June 20. The issues were poor working conditions as well as low wages. The leader of the protest was V. Kalyanasundaram Mudaliar. 

1930: Sad demise of Hamid Ali Khan Bahadur
On June 20, 1930, Hamid Ali Khan Bahadur left us. He was the Nawab of the princely state of Rampur from 1889 to 1930. 

1985: Mother Teresa awarded the Presidential Medal 
Mother Teresa was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She got this recognition from President Ronald Reagan.

2012: Death of Balu Sankaran
Sir Balu Sankaran was a professor, scientist by profession. He was also awarded the Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan awards. He further helped to establish an artificial limb manufacturing corporation and a rehabilitation institute.

What Happened Around the World on June 20?

1782: National Symbol of the United States
Approval from Congress was received regarding the  Great Seal of the United States of America and the bald eagle as its symbol.

1862: Assassination of the Prime Minister of Romania
The Prime Minister of Romania, Barbu Catargu was assassinated.

1866: Italy declared war on Austria.
War was declared by Italy on Austria. It signified the beginning of the Third Italian War of Independence.

1943: Foundation of the CORE
The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) was founded in Chicago.

1949: Central Intelligence Agency Act passed
The United States federal law permitted the Central Intelligence Agency to use confidential fiscal and administrative procedures and exempting it from many of the usual limitations on the use of federal funds.

1975: The famous movie “Jaws” released
Jaws were based on the book by Peter Benchley. The released movie was directed by Steven Spielberg and starred Roy Scheider.

1977: Formation of the Israeli government
On June 20, 1977, the Israeli government was formed by Menachem Begin as the Prime Minister.

1988: Discrimination held illegal 
The Supreme Court of the United States upheld the law that made it illegal for private clubs to discriminate against women and minorities. 

1990: Asteroid Eureka was  discovered
5261 Eureka is the first Mars trojan that was discovered by David H. Levy and Henry Holt at Palomar Observatory, on 20 June 1990.

2020: Donald Trump’s first re-election rally
Donald Trump controversially held his first re-election rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Surprisingly, only 6,200 people attended despite the campaign stating 1 million had registered. Social media campaign organized by teens on TikTok, K-Pop fans and others, claims responsibility for wildly inflating the expected attendance.

2020: Highest Temperature in Siberia
The Highest-ever temperature was recorded in the Arctic circle. It was 38C (100F) in Verkhoyansk, Siberia.

Famous Birthdays on June 20

1928: Jean-Marie Le Pen
Jean-Marie Le Pen is a former Member of the European Parliament. He was also a  French politician who served as President of the National Front from 1972 to 2011. He also worked as Honorary President of the National Front from 2011 to 2015. He graduated from the faculty of law in Paris in 1949.

1936: Sushma Seth
The very beautiful Sushma Seth is an Indian actress. She started her career in the 1950s. Her first film was Junoon in 1978. She is also the founder of the Delhi based theatre group Yatrik

1967: Nicole Kidman
On June 20, Nicole Kidman, an American-Australian actress was born. Side by side, she’s also a singer and a producer. She has received numerous awards throughout her career which includes two Primetime Emmy Awards, five Golden Globe Awards, and an Academy Award from four nominations.

1972: Rahul Khanna
The eldest son of late politician and Bollywood actor Vinod Khanna, Rahul Khanna was born on June 20, 1972. He is an Indian actor and worked in some of the great films like “wake up sid!”.

1985: RJ Balaji 
Balaji Patturaj is commonly known as RJ Balaji. By Profession, he is an Indian radio jockey, presenter, comedian, director, cricket commentator. He is also an actor based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu
