What Happened in India on June 1?

1874-  The East India Company was dissolved.

1904- Four language panels were used for Rangoon. The languages include Burmese, Urdu, Chinese, and Tamil.

1916- Lokmanya Tilak roared the slogan, “Freedom is our birthright!” at Ahmednagar.

1930- The first Indian luxurious fast train, namely “Deccan Queen” started from Victoria Terminus (CST) to Pune.

1945- Tata Fundamental Research Institute was formed.

1964-   Nava Paisa, established in 1947, was renamed as ‘Paisa’.

1972-  The Space Commission and Department of Space was set up. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was brought under the Department of Space (DOS).

1996-  H. D. Deve Gowda becomes Prime Minister of India.

2008- IPL Cricket Final in DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai: Rajasthan Royals win the inaugural event by beating Chennai Super Kings by 3 wickets. Yusuf Pathan’s top scores with 56 (39).

1204- Rouen was conquered by King Philip Augustus of France.

1908- John Krohn began walking around the perimeter of the US which took 357 days to complete.

1926- Ignacy Moscicki was elected President of Poland.

1939- First major boxing match on US television is the heavyweight bout from NY’s Yankee Stadium between former world champion Max Baer and Lou Nova; Nova wins by TKO in the 11th round.

2020- US President Trump threatens to employ the military to quell protests across the country sparked by the death of George Floyd then walks with staff to St. John’s Church.

1929- Nargis Dutt was born on June 1 in Fatima Rashid in Prayagraj, India. She, by profession, is an Indian actress, screenwriter, and politician. She made her debut in the Bollywood cinemas when she was 5 years old. 

1970- R. Madhavan aka Ranganathan Madhavan is an Indian actor, writer, director, and producer. We have seen his work in both Hindi and Tamil movies. He won four Filmfare Awards South. 

1985- Dinesh Karthik. Dinesh Karthik is an Indian cricketer and a part of the current Indian cricket team. He is a wicket-keeper and batsman for the team and made his debut in the year of 2004

1990- Laxmi Agarwal is an Indian activist and someone the country is proud of. She is the campaigner of Stop Sale Acid and also a TV host. She is an acid attack survivor, and she speaks for other acid attack victims. Laxmi received a 2014 International Women of Courage award by US First Lady Michelle Obama.

1996- Tom Holland is an English actor and received the London Film Critics Circle Award for Young British Performer of the Year. He became more famous by his work as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
