1. 1900: Birsa Munda Ranchi Jail

This day commemorates the historical death of Freedom fighter Birsa Munda Ranchi Jail.

2. 1964: Lal Bahadur Shastri became the Prime Minister

On June 9, 1964, Lal Bahadur Shastri became the Prime Minister of India. He became the second prime minister after Jawaharlal Nehru passed away.

3. 1986: First AIDS death report

The first AIDS death report was informed by a private hospital.

4. 1997: Landslide in Gangtok

The death of approximately 50 people and around 5,000 families were affected due to a  landslide in Gangtok on June 9, 1997.

5. 1998: Cyclone in Gujarat

A cyclone that occurred in Gujarat killed nearly 1000 people in six days.

6. 1998: Indian Rupee Fell

The value of the Indian Rupee (INR)fell to 42.23/25 against the dollar on June 9, 1998.

7. 1999: The Indian army occupied two key positions in the Batalik sector. 

1. 1549: Book of Common Prayer

The Church of England adopted the Book of Common Prayer on June 9, 1549.

2. 1815: Final Act of the Congress of Vienna

The happening of the Final Act of the Congress of Vienna, which comprised several agreements and separately negotiated among different participants for the reorganization of Europe after the Napoleonic Wars. The petition was signed. The representatives were Austria, France, Great Britain, Portugal, Prussia, Russia, and Sweden.

3. 1868: Assassination of Serbian Prince Michael III

Serbian Prince Michael III was assassinated on June 9, 1868. Further, the incident derailed the Balkan League’s plans for a coordinated rebellion against the Ottomans and destroyed the league.

4. 1870: Charles Dickens

The death of the famous English writer Charles Dickens, at Gad’s Hill near Chatham, Kent. He is considered to be the greatest Victorian novelist, to date.

5. 1934: Donald Duck

On June 9, 1934, Donald Duck, a famous Disney cartoon, made his first appearance as a supporting role in The Wise Little Hen.

6. 1940: Italy declared war against France and Great Britain. 

Italy was under the rule of Benito Mussolini. Declaration of the war gave rise to World War II on June 9, 1940. 

7. 1949: Nineteen Eighty-Four Published 

George Orwell published his seminal novel ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ on June 9, 1949. 

8. 2016: Gordie Howe died in Toledo, Ohio.

Canadian ice hockey player Gordie Howe died in Toledo, Ohio. Gordie Howe was one of hockey’s best players. He is known for his extraordinary puck handling, wrist shots, and legendary toughness.

9. 2019: 1 million people protested in Hong Kong

Over 1 million people protested in Hong Kong on June 9, 2019, over proposing the new extradition laws to China, making it one of the largest-ever protests in the city. 

1. 1942: Anil Manibhai Naik

Anil Manibhai Naik is the Group Chairman of Larsen and Toubro Limited. Also, he is an Indian industrialist, philanthropist. Since 2018 he is the Chairman of the National Skill Development Corporation.

2. 1949: Kiran Bedi

She is an Indian politician, social activist, retired police officer, and tennis player. She was the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry from May 2016 to February 2021. She is the first Indian female to become an officer in the Indian Police Service and she started her service in 1972. 

4. 1981: Natalie Portman

She has received the Academy Award for Best Actress. She received recognition for her role as Nina Sayers in the 2010 thriller Black Swan.

5. 1985: Sonam Kapoor

She is the daughter of Anil Kapoor. She is an Indian actress receiving the National Filmfare awards. Also, she appeared in the Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list based on her income and popularity.
