What is the IELTS Exam?

IELTS is an English language test for going abroad. If someone wants to work or study in countries where English is the main language of communication, then this test has to be given. Format of IELTS Exam

Introduction of Writing Task 1

This task is an important task for the IELTS Exam. It is known as IELTS Academic Writing Task 1. IELTS Writing Task 1 asks a candidate to write a summary of at least 150 words about some visual information, generally in the form of a graph or chart. The candidate needs to select the main characteristics and describe and compare the data provided. Some points to consider for Writing Task 1 are – 

• You must write at least 150 words. If you write less than 150 words, you are unlikely to receive more than a Band 5 for “Task Achievement” as you have not met the judging criteria. 
• You have about 20 minutes to plan and write your essay. 
• You must use a formal writing style. 
• Writing Task 1 contributes half as many points to your grade as Writing Task 2.
• Writing Task 1, therefore, accounts for 33% of the total score of the writing test.

Overview of the Writing Task 1

You will be provided with questions in the form of a Bar Chart, Line Graph, Table Chart, Pie Chart, Process Diagram, Map, or Multiple Graphs (any of these). 

After analyzing the data and chart, you will be asked to write a short report that should be extracted from the chart itself. You may be asked to summarise data or describe the stages of a process or explain how a particular thing works or describe an object or event.

Tips to Crack the IELTS Writing Task 1

Cracking IELTS Writing Task 1 can be tricky as you need to pay attention to every minute detail. If you score less than 6 Band in IELTS Writing Task 1, you need to work on your shortcomings to achieve at least Band 7. So, here are some tips you should follow to pass Writing Task 1 with good scores. Let’s read about them – 

Tip 1 – Analyse Before You Write

The major mistake IELTS candidates make is that they don’t analyse the question and start writing right away. By doing this they miss out on some important key features that are extremely important to get at least 7 Band on the IELTS Writing 1 task. 

The question consists of a chart, so for describing the chart, you must first read the question properly to know the main information of the chart, as it would be helpful for writing the introduction. Then go through X-axis and Y-axis to find units to mention along with numbers and also know the other details. 

Tip 2 – To the Point

Some candidates have a misconception about the description of things in IELTS Writing Task 1. In order to write as few words as possible, they tend to describe the chart as it is, without analysing it or extracting important ideas.

Rather, you should analyse the information, extract only the vital results and write the point description. Also, try to write all this in a unique way to grab the examiner’s attention. 

Tip 3 – Compare and Write 

One of the important skills required to answer IELTS Writing Task 1 is to paraphrase the information contained in the question. You can use synonyms, change word order, or make active statements passive, but make sure you don’t copy the question itself. 

Also, do not forget to do a comparison to look for similarities in the trend on the chart and mention that as a key feature. Then keep an eye on the differences in the table, which will also be an important highlight for inclusion in your IELTS Writing task 1 answer. Use good vocabulary to give your answer a well-defined structure. 

Tip 4 – Proofread is a Must

Proofreading your work is extremely important as it can help you find any mistakes in your writing. This overhaul will really make a drastic difference in the performance of your band notes. Listening

For this, you can watch any English film channel. This will give you a lot of good practice. If possible, listen to English songs and watch English news channels. You can also watch a different YouTube video every day. 

Reading

You read daily English newspapers like the Times of India and The Hindu from beginning to end. This will improve your vocabulary and grammar. Underline important dates, events and names of people while reading, as many questions in IELTS are based on these. It is important for you to do time management during the IELTS test. If you are unable to find the answer to the question, skip it and move on to the next one, you can always come back. Sometimes the easiest questions are at the end, so go through the entire paper.

Writing

Speaking 

Start the practice of speaking English from home itself, if there is an English speaker at home, then even better. Interact with them in English for half an hour every day.
