Alumni of IIM, Ahmedabad, Indian-Origin Academician to Become Dean of Harvard Business School

Dean of Harvard Business School

Srikant Datar, an Indian origin academician has been named as the Dean of the Harvard Business School, Harvard University consecutively for the second time. Datar is an alumnus of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and the University of Bombay and was associated with Harvard Business School as Arthur Lowes Dickinson Professor of Business Administration and senior associate dean. Mr Datar is expected to take his charge as the next dean from January 1 onwards. 

Mr Datar has been acknowledged as an eminent thinker about the future of business education as he has recently played a vital role in generating creative responses for the challenges HBS was facing due to covid-19 pandemic. Over his course of 25 years at Harvard, he has served the organisation with distinction at various positions and forging fruitful correlations with other schools of Harvard.

Recently, Mr Datar has stated that he feels honoured and humbled taking up this new role. Harvard Business School is no less than a legacy when it comes to impacting education research and other practices. He also added that he is looking forward to working with friends and colleagues at the HBS to live up to the mission of the university. 

Succeeding Mr Nohria, Mr Datar will be the 11th dean of the business school history. Mr Nohria had earlier announced the conclusion of his deanship around June 2020 after serving the institution for almost 10 years. Owing to the current pandemic situation, Mr Nohria had announced to continue his duties until December 2020. 

Educational Journey of Mr Srikant Datar 

After completing a bachelor’s degree with distinction from the University of Bombay in 1973, Datar went on to pursue a postgraduate diploma from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad in Business Management. Later, he pursued a master’s degree in Statistics and Economics followed by a PhD in business from the reputed Stanford University.

After completing the educational journey, he was employed at the Carnegie Mellon School of Industrial Administration from 1984- 1989, first as an assistant professor and then an associate professor. While studying there, he was also honoured with the George Leland Bach Teaching Award. Further, 1996 onwards he became a part of Stanford Graduate School of Business where he was awarded the school’s Distinguished Teaching Award. 

As time flew he continued to awe people, his present research papers became popular in the academic audience in Asia, Africa, Europe, South America and  North America. Mr Datar has also been a part of the governing body of Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta.
