LBSNAA began in 1959 with the GOI establishing the National Academy of Administration. This was done by combining two existing institutions which were the IAS Staff College in Shimla and IAS Training School in Delhi.
- In the year 1972, the academy was renamed to honour Lal Bahadur Shastri, a former Prime Minister of India.
- A year later, it received its current name, the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration.
- Before becoming a training ground for civil servants, the LBSNAA campus was a private hotel known as the Charleville Hotel.

What is the Eligibility of LBSNAA?
LBSNAA is a premier training institute for aspiring IAS officers who have successfully cleared the Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC. After service allocation, all IAS recruits go through a mandatory two-year training program at LBSNAA.
Tailored Training for Different Services
There is tailor-made training for different services such as IFoS, IFS, IRS and IPS, they are as follows:
- Indian Forest Service (IFoS): Training takes place at the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy in Dehradun.
- Indian Foreign Service (IFS): Officers receive training at the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service in New Delhi.
- Indian Revenue Service (IRS): Training is conducted at the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN).
- Indian Police Service (IPS): Officers train at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad.

The IAS Training Program
Additionally, the IAS training program at LBSNAA has 4 phases which are as follows:
- Foundation Course (4 Months): This introductory module is mandatory for all Grade A civil service aspirants such as IAS, IPS, and IFS officers.
- Phase-1: After the foundation course, IAS trainees embark on “Bharat Darshan,” a nationwide exposure tour. This is followed by a one-year district training program.
- Phase-2: This phase involves sharing experiences from Phase-1 and district training. Moreover, it also features specialised subject sessions led by experts.
- Phase-3 (Mid-Career Training Program): This program caters to officers with approximately eight years of experience.
- Phase-4 (New Addition): This recently introduced phase targets officers with 15 years of service who are potential Joint Secretary candidates.

What is the Fees and Salary of LBSNAA?
LBSNAA trainees do not pay tuition fees. Instead, they receive a stipend during their training period. The exact amount can vary, but it is normally around Rs 56,000 per month. However, deductions are made for mess and hostel fees, bringing the net amount received to approximately Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000 per month. Additional expenses like uniforms and personal needs will also need to be factored in.
