PCS full form

The full form of PCS is Provincial Civil Service. It is a state-level civil service that falls under Group A and Group B which is a part of the executive branch of the Uttar Pradesh Government. It is a multi-level state service exam to select government employees conducted by Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC). The notification for the PCS examination comes as the Combined State / Upper Subordinate Services Examination. 

Eligibility Criteria 

  • The applicant should have a bachelor’s degree in any field from a recognised university in India. 
  • The minimum age of the applicant should be 21 years while the maximum age limit is 40 years. 
  • Certain posts in PCS also require physical measurements and fitness tests. Therefore, candidates for these posts need to go through a medical examination. The posts which require the candidate to go through the medical examination are – Excise Inspector,  Superintendent of Jail, District Commandant Home Guard, Assistant Conservator of Forest, Range Forest Officer, Dy. Superintendent of Police. Superintendent of Police.

Roles and Responsibilities 

  • A PCS officer is responsible for collecting land revenue and acting as a court in matters related to revenue.
  • They also prevent criminal offenses in the state by acting as a court in crime-related matters. 
  • Their responsibility also includes maintaining law and order and making sure policies of state and union governments are implemented properly and are followed by the common people.
  • A PCS officer is responsible to look after the administrative-related tasks and ensure the smooth functioning of day-to-day tasks of the government.

Difference Between IAS and PCS officers

IAS and PCS officers have somewhat similar roles and responsibilities because of which they are often confused with each other. Appointed by the President of India, IAS officers work under the state government as per the cadre allocated to them. PCS officers are appointed by the governor of the state and they also work under state government. As compared to PCS officers, IAS officer has more power, salary, and greater responsibilities.
