The second annual Arab University Rankings published by Times Higher Education placed five of the top ten universities in Saudi Arabia. This is the second year running that King Abdulaziz University wins the top rank above 168 other universities from all over the area.
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) places second, followed by Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University (fourth), King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (sixth) and King Saud University (joint seventh) – among a total of 32 Saudi universities in the rankings.

With an average score of 75.2, the region performs exceptionally well in the category of international orientation, which evaluates the percentage of foreign-born students and employees as well as international co-authorship and collaboration within the Arab world. The nation also performs well with an average score of 74.7 for citations as per the release.
The United Arab Emirates has the highest overall score in the region, at 71.2. Its top university is Khalifa University, which is ranked fifth and is followed by the United Arab Emirates University and the University of Sharjah, which are both ranked seventh (ninth).
The number of universities participating in the ranking increased significantly this year, from 125 to 169. The Arab University Rankings are based on the same extensive table as the World University Ranking, measuring research-intensive universities across all of their core missions (teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook), but they have undergone some significant changes to reflect the characteristics of universities in the Arab region.
