Delhi Govt Launches Crackdown on Fake Universities

The Delhi state government has asked the police to file an FIR against seven private universities which have been declared as fake by the University Grants Commission. The UGC declared 7 private universities as fake earlier this year. The state government has written to the deputy commissioner of police to look into this matter more deeply and provide a detailed report as soon as possible. Since 1994, UGC has published a yearly list of fake universities in order to warn students beforehand so as to not become a victim of such a crime. How is Delhi Govt Launching Crackdown on Fake Universities?

The letter from the Delhi state government was sent to the police on December 9, 2020, which stated the matter regarding the fake universities and requested the police to take suitable action regarding the matter. On the release of the fake universities list in October 2020, it was noticed that 4 out of these 7 universities don’t even have an online presence.  A well-furnished report from the police is awaited which will be submitted to the UGC as well.

Updates from Fake Universities

The spokesperson at the Commercial University stated that they shut down the university years ago and only operate a corporate office in that name now. 

The dean of Vishwakarma University, VM Mahajan denied any claims regarding the fake university and said that the UGC has been putting them on a fake university list for the past 10 years and they have been denying it since then. They said that we provide education in order to help people become job givers. They believe in their own philosophy of education and don’t want any help from the government. 

The legal advisor of Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya also straight away denied the Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya being recognized as a fake university. He said that this is a spiritual university and doesn’t offer any degree or diploma. He further said that UGC doesn’t have anything to do with spiritual universities.

Unlike every year, the UGC asked the state governments to take actions on these fake universities this year which is why the Delhi state government has written to the police to take the necessary action. The Delhi government has already started the process of collecting every piece of information regarding these fake universities.
