Pursuing a postdoctoral program after PhD opens the doors to numerous career opportunities in academics, advanced research, and senior managerial roles. 1. SERB Overseas Postdoctoral Fellowship

With the aim of promoting post-doctoral research in the field of Science and Technology, the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, offers post doctoral fellowships for academically exceptional students. Known as the Overseas Postdoctoral Fellowship(SERB-OPDF), it is applicable for a period of one year for those who want to go for postdoctoral research in fields like quantum computing, materials, sustainable chemistry, robotics, etc around the world except in USA. The candidates who hold a PhD degree in a related field, not earlier than 2 years from the time of applying are eligible to apply for this fellowship program. 

2. Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

Designed for professionals who are currently in the early stages of the research careers, Fulbright-Nehru post doctoral fellowships provide the researchers with access to the finest resources in their respective areas and help build strong collaborations with the faculty and institutions. Affiliated to only the US host institutions, this 8-24 months fellowship program covers the fields of Science and Technology, Education, Humanities, Social Science, Law and Commerce to name a few. To be eligible for this, the candidates should have completed their PhD or Doctorate in Medicine(DM). Apart from the J-1 visa support, monthly stipend, round trip economy class air travel, accident and sickness cover, etc will be also covered under this fellowship. 

3. Max Weber Programme for Postdoctoral Studies

One of the largest international post doctoral fellowships in the world dedicated to Humanities and Social Science subjects, Max Weber Programme for Postdoctoral studies is funded by the European Commission where bursaries are awarded for 1-2 years. It selects around 50 to 55 applicants every year and encourages the fellows to make a central contribution in their fields and share their research experiences with their counterparts from other disciplines and nationalities.

4. Human Frontier Science Program

With an aim to advance research in the field of Life Sciences, the HFSP program is offered as either Long term or Cross-disciplinary fellowship. While the former is for those who hold a doctorate degree in biological sciences, the latter is offered to those applicants who possess a PhD degree in subjects outside the purview of Life Sciences like Computer Science, engineering branches, etc. Valid for a period of 3 years, this one of the popular post doctoral fellowships provide living, research, and travel allowances. Only those who hold a doctorate degree or one equivalent to PhD program and have at least 1 first-authored publication(accepted/published) in an international peer-reviewed journal are eligible to apply for the program. Further, a candidate should be a national of the member countries like India, Spain, Latvia, Belgium, USA, Singapore, etc.

5. Newton International Fellowship

The Royal Society, Academy of Medical Science, and British Academy together run this popular post doctoral fellowships for early-stage postdoctoral students. Open to all international candidates, the fellowship is available in Natural Science subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, etc. It covers expenses(research and relocation) for 2 years and offers £24,000 yearly subsistence. To apply for this, the candidate: 

  • Must hold a PhD degree or should complete it by the time finding starts.
  • Should not be a UK citizen and should be working outside UK. 
  • Must have a research project ready, agreed by the scientist. 

6. Sofja Kovalevskaja Award

Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany, Sofja Kovalevskaja Award is one of the top post doctoral fellowships that is specially designed for those who are in the early stages of their research career. The candidates who have completed their doctorate degree with distinction in the last six years and have their works published in international journals can apply for this. The selected candidates can spend five years to carry out an innovative and high-profile research project in any field and at any research center of their choice. Under this fellowship program, the winner is entitled to an award fund of up to 1.65 million EUR and the amount fund covers the expenses related to the research project, travel expenses, necessary equipment, etc.

7. University of Edinburgh IASH Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH), Scotland provides research enthusiasts, who are currently in their mid or at a senior level in their research careers a platform through fellowships and bursaries to conduct research in the field of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. These post doctoral fellowships allow them for a research visit at The University of Edinburgh for a period of 3 to 10 months with a grant of up to £13,000. The candidates will be given dedicated office space and will be allocated a mentor from the university itself. To apply for this program, the candidate needs to meet the following eligibility criteria: 

  • The candidate must hold a doctoral degree in the last three years preceding the date of application. 
  • The candidates should not have held any previous fellowship or permanent post in the university. However, the ones who have held short-term or temporary appointments are eligible to apply.
