Molecular Biology

The study of the composition, structure and interaction of cellular molecules such as nucleic acids and proteins which carry the biological processes which are essential for the maintenance and functioning of the cell is referred to as molecular biology. An important aspect of molecular biology is that the information flow in organisms follows a one-way path – Genes are transferred to RNA and later RNA is transferred to proteins.

With the collaborative efforts of physicists, chemists and biologists, the concept of molecular biology came into existence. With the evolution of the double helix structure of DNA, modern molecular biology was discovered. A degree in molecular biology assists in the analysis of biology at a very basic molecular level and deals with the study of the structure and function of all the organisms.

Molecular Biology – Eligibility Criteria

The programs in Molecular Biology are offered generally at the post-graduation level. An aspirant would be eligible to pursue MSc in Molecular Biology if he/she has studied Biology at the Intermediate and Graduation Level. A B.Sc. in Genetics, Microbiology, Zoology or Botany also fulfills the eligibility criteria to pursue M.Sc in Molecular Biology.

In order to be eligible for carrying out research work in the field, one must qualify the CSIR-UGC-NET exam or the ICMR JRF examination taking Life Science. Engineering or B.Pharm graduates with Biotechnology as a subject of study, having qualified in GATE examination with a minimum of 85 percentile can also apply for Research Fellowship subject to qualifying the written test and/or interview.

Scope of Molecular Biologists

In comparison with the fields of basic and applied sciences, the level of competition in molecular biology is less as this is a rare field of science which is still evolving. If you have the zeal for this subject and the required academic qualifications, then you can certainly make a great career out of this field. Remember that this field is challenging and rewarding as well.
Molecular Biologists can find employment opportunities in the research labs which are established by the Government of India or also in the R&D departments of various private drug companies. You can work on developing therapeutic drugs to working on stem cell research and in other areas within the field of medical development.

As a molecular biologist, you may find opportunities of research like cloning, sub-cloning, synthetic RNA transcription, gene expression, cell growth & development, cell & organelle structure and assembly and DNA dynamics & chromosome structure.

Recording and then analyzing various types of data are critical aspects of working as a molecular biologist. Proper application of research in order to solve the health-related problems and cure the diseases can also be a career option for the molecular biologists.

Keeping the focus on your field of interest, you can explore the possibility of opting for molecular biology if you fit into the eligibility criteria.
