Geography is a field of science, which explore both physical properties of the Earth’s surface and explores a relationship between people and the environment. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is among the renowned boards of examinations in India which provides a comprehensive Geography syllabus. Geography Class 10 – Syllabus and Weightage

The Social Science exam of CBSE class 10 board examination is of 80 marks out of which 20 marks are allocated to Geography. Thus, performing well in this section becomes important. Given below, is a list of topics covered under Geography class 10:

Geography Class 10 Chapters 

For those students who cant mug updates and events of History or can’t perform well in the Civis section of the subject, Geography is the only option left to meet the passing marks. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that it is easier to grasp the learning of Geography over the other two division of Social Sciences. Given below is the brief description of chapters that fall in the syllabus of the same: 

Resources and Development

Under this chapter of Geography class 10, the student will understand the value of resources and the need for their judicious utilisation and conservation. Topics which are covered in this chapter include types of resources, need for resource planning, soil types and distribution, land as a natural resource, land use pattern, land degradation and conservation measures.

Forest and Wildlife Resources

In the Forest and Wildlife chapter, of Geography class 10, students will learn and understand the importance of forests and wildlife in one environment. Topics which are included under this heading include Biodiversity or Biological Diversity, Flora and Fauna in India, The Himalayan Yew in trouble, Conservation of forest and wildlife in India, Types and distribution of forests and wildlife resources, Project Tiger, and Community and Conservation.

Water Resources

The student understands the importance of water as a resource as well as develop awareness towards judicious use and conservation through this Geography class 10 chapter. Students study about sources and distribution of water, utilisation of water, water scarcity, multi-purpose projects, rainwater harvesting and need for conservation and management of water.


Under this chapter of Geography Class 10, the student will understand the importance of agriculture in the national economy, and identifying various types of farming and discuss the various farming methods. Topics which are covered in this heading are- types of farming, cropping pattern, technological and institutional reforms, Major Crops and Impact of Globalization on Agriculture.

Minerals and Energy Resources

The Minerals and Energy resources chapter of Geography Class 10, discuss various types of minerals as well as their uneven nature of distribution and explain the need for their judicious utilisation. Students under this chapter study on types of minerals, Mode of occurrence of Minerals, Ferrous and Nonferrous Minerals, distribution of minerals (on a map only), types of power resources, conventional and unconventional resources and it uses. 

Manufacturing Industries

This chapter of Geography class 10 aims to discuss the importance of industries in the national economy as well as understand the regional disparities which resulted due to concentration of industries in some areas and also discuss the need for planned industrial development and debate over the role of government towards sustainable development. Topics which are included under this heading include types of minerals, the spatial distribution of minerals (on a map only), the Contribution of Industry to National Economy, the Contribution of Industry to National Economy, Classification of Industries, Importance of manufacturing and Control of Environmental Degradation.

Lifelines of National Economy

This chapter of Geography Class 10, explains the importance of communication and transportation in the world and provide an understanding of the role of trade in the economic development of a country. Students will study on the  Transport – Roadways, Railways, Pipelines, Waterways, Airways, International Trade, Communication and Tourism as a Trade.
