History, Affiliations and Rankings
Established in 1789 by Bishop John Caroll, Georgetown University is the oldest Catholic University of higher education in the United States. The idea to create the University was conceived when John Carroll secured the deal for one acre of land on a hilltop overlooking the village of Georgetown. The first classes were held in 1792 following which the University witnessed significant expansions in enrollment and education over the years after the Civil War, the Second World War and the Great Depression. The University is accredited by Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The institution has religious affiliations with Roman-Catholic and athletic affiliation with NCAA Division I – Big East, Patriot League, Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA), and Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC). Georgetown University ranks #130 in World University Rankings by Times Higher Education 2022 and #281 in World University Rankings by QS.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
Georgetown University has three campuses located on the outskirts of Washington. The main campus has an area of 104 acres with a sustainable design integrated into the planning process by incorporating projects with proactive landscape elements, utilizing infrastructure networks that eliminate redundancy and increase efficiency, and more. In 2009, Georgetown also undertook a commitment that all new facilities and major renovations will be designed to a LEED Silver certification or higher. Through the focused implementation of these priorities, development opportunities will improve systems that reinforce social, environmental, and financial sustainability objectives. Situated on a hilltop offering a mesmerizing view of North Virginia and the River Potomac. Moreover, the university's main campus has various fountains, courtyards, and cemeteries. The institution also has campuses in Qatar, Italy, and Turkey. Georgetown University provides bachelor’s, master’s, and professional programs through its nine schools - offering specializations in Arts, Science, Social Sciences, Medical Health, Business, and Law.

Georgetown University has been rated R1 - Doctoral Institutions and is described as a “student-centred research institution.” The Law School of Georgetown University has the nation’s fifth-biggest library. Georgetown University’s Cancer Center has developed an HPV vaccine for cervical cancer and is one of the most research-intensive cancer centres in the United States.Georgetown University ranks #130 in World University Rankings by Times Higher Education 2022 and #281 in World University Rankings by QS. Georgetown University has about 19,000 students on-campus out of which 7,500 are undergraduates and 11,500 are postgraduates. There are around 4,000 international students on-campus.
