PROM Full Form

The PROM full form is Programmable Read-Only Memory. This is a type of non-volatile computer memory. In this type, once the data is written it cannot be erased. We use PROM to store programmes and firmware for digital devices and microcontrollers.

What are the Uses of PROM?

Let us take a look at the uses of PROM:

  • One of the most prevalent applications of PROM chips is to store important data. We cannot modify this stored data. It is used in medical systems or security systems.
  • One can program PROM using special devices such as a PROM burner or PROM programmer.
  • PROMs are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes. It is used suitably depending on the type of use.
  • They are either through-hole or surface-mount devices. They are usually made of silicon and other materials such as glass and ceramic.

What are the Types of PROM?

Given below are the various types of PROMs:

  • EEPROM – It is an electronically erasable PROM that enables the user to erase and reprogram using an electrical signal. This sets a good example of the difference between non-volatile and volatile memory.
  • EPROM – Erasable PROM is a type of PROm that can be erased and reprogrammed using ultraviolet light.
  • Flash EEPROM – Flash electronically erasable PROM allows the user to erase and reprogram in blocks instead of one byte at a time. This justifies the name of Flash EEPROM as it makes it faster to erase and program better than regular EEPROMs.
  • APROM – Addressable PROM, is programmed without the use of any special device like a PROM programmer. It stores data in an array of cells. We can address these cells individually.
  • MPROM – Masked PROM is programmed during its manufacturing process. We cannot erase or reprogram it.
