How Did Babur Died

Babur, whose full name was Zahir-ud-din Muhammad Babur, was a descendant of Timur and Genghis Khan. He established the Mughal Empire in India in 1526 after defeating Ibrahim Lodhi in the First Battle of Panipat. Babur was known for his military acumen, diplomatic skills and cultural patronage. Legends about Babu’s Death

On December 26, 1530, Mughal Emperor Babur breathed his last in Agra at the age of 47. His death is shrouded in mystery with many legends doing rounds, but the witnesses have all kept themselves underground. Here are some of the reasons as to why he died – 

  1. Illness and Natural Death 

One popular theory about Babur’s death is that he succumbed to a sudden illness. According to historical accounts, Babur fell ill in the winter of 1530, shortly before his death. Some historical accounts also suggest that he was suffering from a form of unknown fever. Despite the efforts of his physicians, Babur’s condition continued to deteriorate, ultimately leading to his demise.

  1. Assassination

Since it is unbelievable that such a young and strong ruler may die of just a severe fever, another legend that surrounds Babur’s death is he was poisoned by the mother of Ibrahim Lodhi. After the Battle of Panipat, when Ibrahim Lodhi died, Babur gave shelter to his mother in his palace. Thus to avenge the death of his son, the mother took revenge by poisoning his food.

  1. Sacrificial Act

Another tale that does rounds is Humayun was severely ill and Babur was not able to endure the pain of his son. He was told that he had to sacrifice something valuable to save his son’s life, thus, when everyone thought he would sacrifice the Kohinoor diamond, he himself sacrificed his life in lieu of his son’s life. 

He was first buried in Agra, but as per Babur’s last wishes his mortal remains were later moved to Kabul and were reburied in Bagh-e-Babur also known as Garden of Babur in Kabul between the year 1539 to 1544.
