When was UNICEF Founded?
UNICEF was founded on 11 December 1946, in New York, by the U.N. Relief Rehabilitation Administration. The organization was created to provide immediate relief to children and mothers affected by World War II (1939-1945).
History of UNICEF
The UN General Assembly wanted UNICEF to further function post-war relief work. Hence in the 1950s, it extended to address the long-term needs of children and women, specifically in developing countries. In 1953, UNICEF became a permanent part of the UN System.
Funding of UNICEF
UNICEF completely relies on voluntary contributions. It gets funding from various governments and private donors. It is governed by an executive board of 36 members. The board includes government representatives elected by the United Nations Economic and Social Council. The members usually have a three-year term. The board is responsible for establishing policies, approving programs, and checking out administrative and financial plans.
