Becoming the Miss World at 18!

Priyanka Chopra was born on July 18, 1982, in Jamshedpur, India. Her father Ashok Chopra and Madhu Chopra, both physicians in the Indian Army, supported in her endeavours right from the beginning. Although she wanted to pursue Aeronautical Engineering, the course of events led her to choose the film industry where she enjoys uncontestable fame. Recognized as one of the best actors in the Indian film industry, she is equally popular in Hollywood. The education of Priyanka Chopra is key to understanding her journey. During her high school, she won the Miss World pageant at the age of 18.

That was the breakthrough moment in her life which was followed by offers from the film industry. Starting her career with a debut in Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta starring ‘The Hero’ movie in 2003, Priyanka Chopra established herself as a leading actress with leading roles in some top-grossing movies like ‘Don’ and ‘Krrish’. Some of her critically lauded movies which won her many awards and prizes included ‘Barfi’ and ‘Mary Kom’. Priyanka Chopra made her debut in Hollywood after she signed a talent holding deal with ABC Studios after which she was cast for a role in the American thriller series Quantico. Besides her career in cinema, she is a renowned philanthropist. Priyanka was selected as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Child Rights on 10 August 2010.

The education of Priyanka Chopra began at the La Martiniere Girls’ School, Lucknow and St. Maria Goretti College, Bareilly. At the age of 13, she moved to the US where she was enrolled in schools like Newton in Massachusetts and John F. Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It was in Massachusetts that she participated in many theatre productions and studied western classical music. After residing for 3 years in the US, she came back to India and completed her studies from Army School in Bareilly. She chose to finish her graduation from Jai Hind College, Mumbai. She did not attend any film school or took any Acting courses. The perseverance and the unquenchable determination that she showed towards her career has made her the rising star of Indian cinema.

Not only is she known for the powerful roles on screen but in real life,  her philanthropic work has garnered her worldwide acclaim. Through her foundation ‘The Priyanka Chopra Foundation for Health and Education,’ she has supported the education of many unprivileged children across the country. Being a feminist herself, she campaigned for ‘Save the Girl Child’ the initiative to spread awareness about foeticide of a girl child. She has actively participated in campaigns for women rights, gender equality and gender pay inequalities. Her role in mitigating the issues at the global level has been influential. Besides five Filmfare Awards, Priyanka Chopra has received numerous accolades which include prestigious National Film Award. In 2016, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri, the highest civilian honorary award in India. In the year 2017, she was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award for her exceptional performances in Indian cinema.
