Scholarships in USA for Nigerian Students

Fulbright Foreign Student Program

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program allows talented graduate students from abroad to study and conduct research in the US. A total of 4,000 international students receive Fulbright scholarships every year. The awarded grant covers tuition fees, textbooks, airfare, a living stipend, and health insurance. The eligibility criteria for getting the Scholarship are:

1. You must be citizens or nationals of Nigeria, or permanent resident of Nigeria.
2. You must be a Doctoral/PhD student who has completed a significant amount of their doctoral program in Nigerian universities 
3. Masters and First-Degree Students are not eligible to apply for this scholarship program.
4. You must have an excellent academic record and high level of English proficiency.
5. You must meet the minimum score on required standardized tests such as a score of 90 in TOEFL.
6. You will be short-listed for interviews if you have strong proposals, research objectives, methodology, time-frame, and justification for conducting the research in the U.S.
7. Preference will be given to you if you’ve not not studied in the U.S.
8. Students having proposals that are tilted toward economics, development-related areas, democracy, human rights and conflict resolution will be given preference 
9. Scholarship is not applicable for students pursuing law, business or accounting programs.

Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program

The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship fellowship provides tuition fees, allowance, accident and health insurance, travel expenses, etc. to the awarded students.  200 Fellowships are awarded annually.  There is no choice of selecting the university as students are placed in participating universities in the USA. The scholarship is offered in the following program fields:

British Chevening Scholarships

Chevening Scholarships are funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organizations. These scholarships are awarded to excellent students from eligible countries for a year of master’s degree. Almost 1500 scholarships are offered to eligible students globally. To get the scholarship, you must:

1. You must be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or region.
2. You’ll have to return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your awarded grant has ended.
3. Having completed all the required components of an undergraduate degree, this will now enable you to gain entry into a postgraduate program at a UK university by the time you submit your application. 
4. An upper second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK but may be different depending on your course and university choice.
5. You must have at least two years of work experience.

Following are some of the scholarships offered by European universities for Nigerian students.

Holland Scholarships for Non-EU/EEA Students

The Holland Scholarship, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science, is awarded to international students who are from the non-EEA area.

This scholarship is offered to students who want to pursue a bachelor’s or masters at a Dutch research University and the University of applied sciences in Holland. This scholarship is not fully funded and is awarded only for one academic year. You are eligible for getting the Scholarship only if

1. Your nationality is non-EEA.
2. You are applying for a full-time bachelor’s or master’s at one of the participating Dutch universities.
3. You meet the specific eligibility requirements of the institution/university of your choice.  
4. You have never before studied at an educational institution in the Netherlands.

DAAD Scholarships for Development-Related Postgraduate Courses

DAAD Scholarships are offered to students hailing from developing countries who want to pursue a master’s degree in a German university. The scholarship is offered for 12-24 months for a master’s degree and 4 years for Ph.D. program. The scholarship is offered in the following fields of study:

3. You must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a related subject.
4. You must’ve completed an academic degree with far above average results (upper third) and ideally at least two years of related professional experience after your bachelors degree.
5. Your academic degrees should not be more than six years old.
6. For courses offered in English, the following are the English Language requirements:

Danish Government Scholarships for Non-EU/EEA Students

This scholarship is offered by the Danish government to international students hailing from non-EEA/EU countries who wish to pursue full-time higher education programs in Denmark. You’ll be eligible for the scholarship if

• You’re a citizen of a country outside the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA).
• You’re enrolled in a full time higher education degree.
• You are granted a time-limited residence permit in Denmark due to education purposes.

Turkey Graduate Scholarships for International Students

These scholarships are funded by the Turkish Government and are offered to citizens of any country in the world. These scholarships are offered to international students who want to pursue bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD Programs at participating Turkish universities. Keep in mind that you’ll have to pursue a Turkish language course for one year.

Singapore International Graduate Award

International students who wish to pursue PhD Programs in Biomedical Sciences; and Physical Sciences and Engineering are awarded these scholarships by the Singapore Government. Almost 240 scholarships are awarded every year to international students. The awarded grant provides financial support (full tuition fees, monthly stipend, settlement allowance, and airfare ) for up to 4 years that is the duration of PhD studies in Singapore.
