Canada to Reopen Borders for Students

The Canadian government has made a decision to re-open the borders of the country for international students and couples who were separated due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The Immigration Minister of Canada, Marco Mendicino made this announcement on Friday 2nd October, after months of banning entry, that international students, as well as non-citizens who are in an exclusive dating relationship with a citizen of Canada will be allowed to enter the country. 

“We recognize that travel restrictions should not keep loved ones apart,” the Immigration Minister told reporters, while adding that “In these challenging times, we know those challenges are best met with the strength and support of those we love by our side.”

What are the Requirements?

Students who wish to enter the country will have to show a proof of registration in a Canadian college or university and universities will be required to have an approved COVID-19 readiness plan in order to be allowed to admit students. The couples will also have to prove the authenticity of their relationship to the government of Canada. 

The announcement came after the ban on non-essential international crossings across the border was extended for another month.

The decision was greatly appreciated by the local people who rejoiced on being able to meet their loved ones again. Some recent pictures on social media however showed couples on dates along the Canadian border, which led to them being questioned by the local authorities of Canada.

As per the new regulations announced by the government, foreign nationals suffering from any life-threatening illness, critical injury or death will also be granted entry.

Travellers will be required to apply for and get authorisation prior to arrival in the country. They will also have to undergo self-quarantine for 14 days. The decision was taken in consideration of the rapidly rising numbers of Covid-19 cases in the country, following which, the US-Canada border might continue to remain closed for the rest of the year.
