History, Affiliations and Rankings
Adelphi University started as the private preparatory school, Adelphi Academy in Brooklyn, New York in 1863 and was incorporated in 1869 with the vision to establish a first class institution that would offer world-class education to the largest of student populations. In 1893, the Head of the Academy established the Adelphi College for Liberal Arts education, that offered degrees in conjunction with the University of the State of New York. It was in 1929, when Adelphi achieved independent University status, that it became the first private, co-educational institution in Long Island. In the 150 years of its history, Adelphi University has emerged as a national best value in the United States, graduating leaders and pioneers. Offering curriculums that are global, technology-driven, innovative and personalized at the heart of New York City, the University has graduated more than 1,00,000 students till date. The University of Adelphi has received various accreditation from reputed organizations such as the New York State Education Department, Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, University of the State of New York, and more. According to the Times Higher Education US College Rankings 2022, Adelphi University is placed at #238, and at #249 in Forbes' list of Top Colleges 2021. Also, according to the US News and World Report 2022, Adelphi ranks #172 in the Best National Universities category.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
Adelphi is the first and one of the oldest institutions of higher education in suburban Long Island, situated only an hour's train ride away from the vibrant arts and cultural scene of New York. The main Garden City campus is a historic location spanning beautiful 75 acres of walkable pathways in the serene suburbs of Long Island. There are 60+ types of shrubs, trees and flowers on this campus, along with academic buildings and a state-of-the-art Center for Recreation and Sports. Adelphi University also has a Manhattan Center that offers flexible programs for working professionals in SoHo District in the historic location called the One Hudson Square. Other Adelphi University centers are - the Hudson Valley Center and the Suffolk Center. The University is academically organized into 8 Schools for Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Health Sciences, Nursing and Public Health, Psychology and Social Work in addition to an Honors College and a School for Professional and Continuing Studies. At Adelphi, courses at Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral levels are offered along with certificates at both, the UG and the PG levels, pre-professional studies, combined Bachelor's + Master's programs and joint degrees with a partner University. Adelphi University has an Online Campus that provides "education at your schedule." Adelphi University is one of the top-ranking universities in the United States that is popularly recognized for its value, graduate outcomes and innovative approach to learning. According to US News and World Report Rankings 2022, the University is recognized as a Best Value School, and as a Top Performer in Social Mobility. Further, 3 programs offered at Adelphi - Undergraduate Business and Undergraduate and Postgraduate Nursing - rank among the top 200 among 2000 programs in the United States as per the same League Table. In 2022, the University was also featured in the Fiske Guide to Colleges among 300 of the "best and most interesting" colleges in the United States. Adelphi University is also a proud winner of the 2020 John L. Blackburn Exemplary Models Award in recognition of its innovative Prep For Success program curated by the Center for Career and Professional Development to enable students to acquire everything from basic employability skills to valuable work experience through placements and internships. Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
Adelphi University has a strong support system for diversity, equity and social justice. It has a total enrollment of approximately 7,500 students of which 5,200 are undergraduates and 2,200 are postgraduate students. A majority of the total student population comprises female students whose weightage is greater than 70%, while more than 4% new first-year constitutes the international student body. Further, nearly 40% of all incoming students at Adelphi have a high school GPA of 3.7+ and constitute the top 20% of their respective high-school classes. A warm and dynamic community of learners, Adelphi University offers as much to experience outside the classroom as inside it, with 90+ student clubs to get involved in. Adelphi maintains collaborations with various institutions and corporations that give study abroad options to students in over 120 countries. Students can use all of their federal and institutional funds for a semester and academic year through direct exchanges with Adelphi partners, while they can use their federal assistance and 75% of Adelphi institutional aid for programs that are not directly affiliated with Adelphi but are from accredited schools and are approved by the Center for International Education—all while staying enrolled on campus.
