SI full form is Sub Inspector. It is a rank in the Indian Police. An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of police is subordinate to a SI, who often oversees a police station. Two stars and a red and blue striped ribbon at the outside of the shoulder strap make up the rank insignia for a SI.

A SI is in charge of the police station where they are placed, and they are accountable for managing that station as well as upholding peace and order within their area of responsibility. Both state and police acts in India mention the responsibilities of a SI.
