What is the Full Form of ASI? 

The full form of ASI is Assistant Sub-Inspector whose post is above the head constable but below the Sub-Inspector. ASI is responsible for performing various essential responsibilities to maintain law and order. They are non-gazetted officers who, like any other government posts, must pass an entrance examination to be appointed ASI. 

Roles and Responsibilities of Assistant Sub-Inspector 

• ASI is responsible for carrying out orders of Sub-Inspectors and other higher-ranking officers.
• One of the vital responsibilities of ASI is to ensure law and order.
• ASI officers are responsible for investigation centres and Police outposts ( or “Phari”).
• They are also responsible for carrying out general duties assigned to them.
• Mainly ASIs are in charge of armouries in police stations. 
• At training centres, ASI is in charge of the officers of Chief Drill.

How to Become an Assistant Sub Inspector? 

Just like any other police officer post, to become an ASI a candidate must clear the entrance examination which is conducted by Staff Selection Commission. Following are the eligibility criteria that a candidate must fulfil in order to apply for the entrance examination: 

Eligibility Criteria 

• The age of the candidate should be between 20 to 25 years though for SC/ST category there is an age relaxation of 5 years whereas for the OBC category, there is a relaxation of 3 years.
• The candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university with a minimum of 50%. 
• The candidate should possess Indian citizenship.
• The height of the candidate should be 170 cm or above. Also, the candidate should have a chest measurement of 80-85 cm. 

ASI Examination Pattern 

• The entrance examination conducted to recruit candidates for ASI posts entails two papers both of which are worth 200 marks (100 marks each).
• A candidate must pass the examination by securing at least 55% marks. The candidate also needs to go through the interview that is conducted in the Physical Endurance Test.
• The first part of the entrance examination is known as Staff Selection Commission Central Police Organisation (CPO) after which there is a Preliminary Eligibility Test (PET) which is conducted in the 2nd and 3rd stages.
• The test is a Municipal Corporation-based exam which is conducted in both Hindi and English language and there is a deduction of quarter marks for every wrong answer given by the candidate.

Medical Tests Requirements 

• The candidate should not be affected by disabilities like – a knock knee, a squint in the eyes, a flat foot, etc.
• The candidate should fulfil the minimum distant vision requirements 6/6 for the better eye and 6/9 for the one which is weak.
• The candidate should not use any sort of vision correction standard which includes eyeglasses. 

Format of the Examination 

• The duration of the Paper 1 is 2 hours and it contains 50 questions which are based on General Awareness, General Reasoning, English and Quantitative Aptitude.
• The duration of the Paper 2 is also 2 hours and it entails 200 questions. Also in this paper, there is a negative marking of 0.25 marks.

Syllabus of ASI Entrance Examination

The entrance examination conducted to recruit candidates for the post of ASI is based on four sections – English,  Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude and General Awareness. The detailed section-wise syllabus is mentioned below: 

English 

This section includes topics like Reading Comprehension, Synonyms, Grammar, Spelling, Vocabulary, Phrases, and other likewise topics. 

Quantitative Aptitude 

This section gauges the numerical aptitude of the candidates. The questions in this section are based on topics like percentages, proportions, ratios, angles, trigonometry and circles.

Reasoning 

The reasoning sections comprise questions that are based on verbal and non-verbal reasoning which gauges the critical thinking of the candidates. This section covers topics like Coding and Decoding, Venn Diagrams, Space Orientation, Critical Thinking, etc. 

General Awareness  

This section covers important topics in General Awareness areas like Current Affairs, Indian Constitution, Culture, General Politics and Geography. 

Another Full Form of ASI  

Another full form of ASI is the Archaeological Survey of India. It comes under the Ministry of Culture and is a primary organisation to carry out archaeological research and protects the cultural heritage of the country. It is in charge of maintaining the archaeological sites, ancient monuments and remains of national importance.  

It carries out the archaeological work as per the provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 1958, apart from other duties. Its main objective is to conserve, store, excavate, store and protect the monuments and other important international and national sites.
