The full form of COP is Conference of Parties. It is an annual gathering which is conducted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The convention is an international multi-lateral treaty between nations globally. In this blog, we will learn about the abbreviation and the various important conferences held.

What is COP?

COP is a yearly event which is organized by UNFCCC. It Is an international environmental treaty adopted in the year 1992 and came into force in 1994. It currently has 198 countries as members and has the goal to reduce the carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions(GHGs) from the environment which is resulting in global warming.

Each year representatives from around the world come together to discuss and negotiate on the issue of climate change and put forward their ideas as national members on how they are helping in combating climate change.

What Happens at a COP?

These conferences are all about the discussion over climate change and the impact of it on every individual. Here are some key activities that happen in COP – 

  1. Assessment of the Progress – Each member of the party presents their achievements and discusses the steps they have taken since the previous COP, based on which assessment is done by analyzing the effectiveness of past agreements.
  2. Set up New Goals –  Leaders from around the world discuss and collaborate on achieving a new higher goal by setting up targets to mitigate the GHGs and climate change.
  3. Share Knowledge and Solutions – Member countries share their experiences and best practices they used to address the issue of climate change.
  4. Financial Discussions – Commitments and Discussions are made between nations regarding the financial support needed by developing nations for their effort towards climate change.

Important COPs Held

Some of the important COPs that were held are – 

  1. COP 3 – It was held in 1997 in Kyoto, Japan, and adopted the Kyoto Protocol, an agreement to set binding GHG reduction targets for developed countries.
  2. COP 15 – This COP was held in Copenhagen in the year 2009 and aimed at establishing a legally binding agreement which failed.
  3. COP  21 – This was a major event in the year 2015 and resulted in the Paris Agreement. This agreement was a global decision to limit global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius.
  4. COP 26–  The meetings of this COP were held in Glasgow, Scotland in 2021. It focused on accelerating the actions and implementation of the Paris Agreement and keeping the goal of reaching the 1.5 degrees Celsius mark.
  5. COP 27 – It was held in 2022 at Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. It established a historic Loss and Damage Fund to help the Vulnerable countries that are facing the horrific impacts of Climate change 

This year COP 28 was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates where world leaders took part in the discussions and agreements.

Another full form of COP

The abbreviation can also mean Chief of Police. He is the officer who is responsible for controlling the force. The officer also oversees the maintenance of Law and order along with the other police officers.  

Duty of COP

The duty of the Chief of Police entails – 

  1. Supervising the operations and finances of the different departments.
  2. Communicate with the higher authorities about the various administrative decisions related to finance or control.
  3. Monitor and supervise the uniforms, communication equipment, police vehicles, etc
  4. Perform tasks like patrolling or investigating crime or assault scenes. 
  5. Create guidelines for the proper functioning of the police departments.
