The full form of IUCN is the International Union for Conservation of Nature. What is IUCN?

75 years ago, on the 5th of October, 1948, in France, the IUCN organization was established and was committed to the conservation of nature as well as biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources. Moreover, Julian Huxley, a British biologist and the first Director General initiated the setup of the organisation. In addition, from the year 1948 to 1956 the IUCN was known as the International Union for the Protection of Nature. Later it changed to the World Conservation Union from 1990 to 2008. 

Today, the IUCN has grown into the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network which includes governments, non-governmental organisations, scientists, and experts from different fields. Furthermore, its headquarters is in Glan, Switzerland with Bruno Oberlo as its Director General and Razan Al Mubarak as its President.

What is the Goal of IUCN?

The primary goal of IUCN is to conserve biodiversity and nature and ensure the sustainable management and use of natural resources. The IUCN imagines a world where nature is valued, respected, and safeguarded for the well-being of the present as well as future generations. Furthermore, the organization employs a science-based approach to engage stakeholders at all levels and advocates for policies that balance conservation and development.

What is the IUCN Red List?

In the year 1964, the IUCN established the Red List of Threatened Species. It includes a thorough information list on a global scale about the extinction threat rank of animal, plant, and fungus species.

In India, the IUCN Red List for the category of CR- Critically Endangered includes:
